People really do stay only for the job security

    Management Analyst (Current Employee)
    Reston, VA

ProsTons of leave.. more leave than you could ever use (I think I have about 400 hours right now), telework-friendly.

ConsNo training, no opportunities for advancement due to Federal pay freeze and sequestration. Employees that do work must carry the workload for all the 'dead weight' employees that have been there for years and just come in to collect a paycheck. Work is extremely unrewarding and it is frustrating to know that ideas will go unnoticed, hard work unrewarded, etc. I don't even know where to begin...

Advice to Senior ManagementWhat's the point? Nothing will ever change in Federal Government.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Miserable place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe pros are that the smart people are leaving this organization in droves.

ConsWith government work this place does not encourage free thought, promotable advances, or anything.

Overall a Good Place to Work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsJob Security, Work/Life Balance, Affordable Benefits, Telework, Good Mission, Strong financial management stewardship, good cowokers, etc.

ConsAt this time the government is in the process of slashing domestic discretionary spending. This has negatively impacted funding for training, IT purchases and hiring.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe organizational structure is way over institutionalized. Changes are difficult to make but this is inherent since the founding of government. I'm not sure how much it can be improved.

    ProsGood experience
    Amazing people to work with

    Ok experience at DOI

    Program Analyst (Current Employee)
    Arlington, VA

ProsGood projects, interactions and mission for the American people. I believe that we can truly make a difference with the projects and tasks we complete.

ConsNot able to complete projects due to budget constraints and changing political will. It is frustrating to work on projects only to have them continually cancelled.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage more employee development

    Substantive internship experience

    Intern (Former Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsVery hands on internship with a wealth of networking and mentorship opportunities. The program is focused on both personal and professional development while introducing undergrads to operations of the federal government

ConsThere are very few cons that I can think of in relation to this internship. The only drawback is that it is a significant time commitment for undergraduates who are also full time students.

    Typical Government Environment

    Program Analyst (Current Employee)
    Denver, CO

ProsJob Security - At least for now
    Benefits

    ConsToo much favortism
    Morale is declining fast
No opportunity for learning new skills or rotation of assignment for career growth
No training except for upper management
Financial system used is not user friendly and frustrating to learn
    Possible layoffs coming

Advice to Senior ManagementI left because DOI offered an early-out that targeted my position. I would ask for a transfers but was continuously denied. In my former organization, there was no opportunity for training and/or career growth. It was also disappointing that only select people were allowed to work from home. Employee surveys are great, and management says they take these into account and are listening, but they aren't and end up doing what they want to do anyway. There is also a great deal of favortism throughout the organization. Money that could be used for employee training is wasted on unnecessary things such as consultants who recommend changing the name of the organization.
