I worked at US National Guard part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pay, opportunity to learn skills and/or a trade (welding, communications, transportation, etc, etc). Ability to learn leadership skills, communication skills. Get to work with great people who share similar interests.

    Cons

Weekend drills occur each month, sometimes you have to miss social events due to drill. I have missed weddings, reunions and other such events due to them falling on the weekend of drill. But, you know that is the price you pay for defending our nation and it is fair.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Training is important, especially when you only have reservists one weekend a month and two weeks a year so make the most of that time.

    Pros

The best advice I can give is that the military can help grow in so many ways. They will help pay for your education and other expenses to help you obtain the degree that you want. They allow you to progress in what ever field you are interested to become a better you.

    Cons

Its hard to work with people that less motivated than I am.

I worked at US National Guard

    Pros

Fair pay across the board. Leadership experience is invaluable, and translates well to the real world after getting out. Employers are impressed when you tell stories about deployments.

    Cons

Some senior leaders do not consider the troops, and are often seeking to look good at the expense of their men. Drill weekends that require driving long distances can create financial hardships for soldiers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put your soldiers first; lead by example, and lead from the front. Stop promoting good old boys.

I worked at US National Guard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very excellent pay and benefits- equivalent to most careers requiring a 4 year degree. Excellent amount of vacation/paid days off available. Excellent medical plan. GI-Bill is awesome. There are few truly qualified and hardworking personnel. The facility supervisor was truly a good supervisor, but was unable to both balance his own work and with managing inefficient subordinates- some key superiors above him were toxic.

    Cons

Widespread practice of favoritism by senior personnel. Several cliques or "Good old boys" groups exists that made it a toxic environment.Preference to employees that are into alcohol use. An open and unsecure facility, old and worn- roof leaks. Too many unhappy personnel (maybe 70%) with personal problems affecting their professional work- marital problems/infidelity, financial problems/debt issues, heavy alcohol use, family problems, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

External audit of work performance and employee evaluations. Some of the most toxic and senior personnel are internally rated/evaluated "Excellent" because of the "good old boys" culture, although they are foul mouthed, easy to belittle unseasoned/inferior subordinates and need to be proven that you belong to their personalities. Toxic senior personnel are taken care by the "good old boys" culture.

I have been working at US National Guard as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Benefits gives soldiers an edge over their civilian counterparts.
Investment in personal capital is quite high.
Ability to learn any job you've chosen and fellow soldiers will help you on any particular path you take. Cross training is available as well as asking to be given orders to work and train in the courses you wish to take.

    Cons

Pretty difficult to taking drill day off without a very good reason.
Almost impossible to change your MOS once you've chosen it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep budget in check, we seem to have run into yet another deficit...

    Pros

The people are great. The benefits are amazing. The training is endless. Each opprotunity is unique. The work-life balance is perfect.

    Cons

There really aren't any Cons to being part of somehing bigger than yourself. I guess the hardest part is being away from family and friends when training events happen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Being open minded about things will get you more respect from all persons. Don't always believe the guy/gal you've been around for years. When you tell someone something, follow through.
