I worked at US Navy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Secure employment with great pay and benefits. Healthcare, meals, travel, recreation. You can work for some phenomenal leaders. Top notch training and education. Very stable

    Cons

Huge beauracracy. You could work for some horrible leaders. Lots of meetings. Lots of busy work. Horrible hours. Lots of deployments. Lots of duty away from family

    Advice to Management

I dont particularly have any advice for management. The navy has been around for such a long time I guess what they are doing is working. I am glad to be done though. Lots of changes over my career.

I have been working at US Navy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Many opportunities to work with great people in great places working on some of the most difficult problems for the United States.

    Cons

We are a military organization, and that has its own issues.

I have been working at US Navy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flying and port calls are a huge bonus. So is the bonus they pay to stick around for Department Head screening.

    Cons

Mouthbreathers who make it to leadership positions can be a real drag. Upper leadership is often out of touch with lower levels to the point that LT's are getting out at an alarming rate.

I have been working at US Navy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If you work hard you can make something of yourself and make the most of what the navy has to offer.

    Cons

budget loss and huge mismanaged infrastructure makes for a difficult environment to stand out and be recognized among your peers

    Advice to Management

Fix evaluation system for enlisted. Stop making marks that can only be filled by selective and rare duty assignments (command/eo). Make PT scores a higher priority and a true evaluation mark. Advertise more about the programs and opportunities available. Level out the pay scale between enlisted and officer.

I have been working at US Navy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Despite what a lot of people say about the pay, it is not as bad as what they want you to think. And the training and experience can be worth it. Add in all the benefits after you get out, and it's actually worth it, but not for everyone

    Cons

Underway time. Working on a submarine. occasionally working 16+ hours in a day, and over 100 hours in a week. Uniform regulations.

I have been working at US Navy (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, decent pay, can see different parts of the world with the navy paying for your move.

    Cons

Extended time away from family, tough working hours while in port, have to work in cramped tight positions at times.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

JFK said it best. Travel. See the world. Get good experience. There are many benefits to serving in the Navy, but the most important is knowing that your work is important and is also part of a history that spans several hundred years.

    Cons

Work-life balance is tough. Ship food is gross. It can be difficult to exercise and maintain health while deployed on a ship for months.

    Advice to Management

Hoo-yah! Keep up the good work. Keep treating the sailors well. You do a good job, but we can always do better. When our sailors get paid more than our Congress, then we can rest easy!
