Amazing travel and learning experiences

Navy Records Manager (Former Employee)
Washington, DC

I worked at US Navy full-time for more than 5 years

ProsJob security, benefits, and travel are second to none. Ability to transfer to other locations is also a big plus.

ConsThe annual budget process can be extremely frustrating. There are many layers of approval for just about all business processes as well. There is high turnover in the Military leadership positions due to rotations.

Advice to Senior ManagementSupport the civilians as much as you do the military staff

Great organization with wide career options

Program Analyst (Current Employee)
Washington, DC

I have been working at US Navy full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood pay, good benefits, 30 days paid time off. Work with good people who share a common interest. Sometimes the commonality leads to group think or a stuck culture. You will get the chance to do work that no other job provides. Flying aircraft in the middle of the ocean is an amazing day at the office.

ConsConstantly moving and uprooting your family, end up doing a brand new job in a new field every 2-3 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to challenge tradition and innovate.

Great

Senior Officer/Manager (Current Employee)
Washington, DC

I have been working at US Navy full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat leadership training; constant opportunity to explore new and diverse career goals. Health and dental benefits are some of the best provides. Additional with incentive pay and promotion opportunity, the compensation for officers is more than adequate.

ConsThe demands of a Naval career are high. Constant deployment and extended work hours lead to a disruptive lifestyle. Additionally, constant moves with children tends to lead to anxiety and disruption.

Advice to Senior ManagementNaval Officers are taught to think on their feet and expeditiously overcome adversity. Not many companies can groom leaders as well as the Navy.

Worked through the Intern Program

Engineering Technician (Former Employee)
Patuxent River, MD

I worked at US Navy as an intern for less than a year

ProsGreat culture. Everyone was very down to earth and willing to help. There was a lot of opportunity for growth if you were to go there full time.

ConsA lot of the employers of the interns didn't have a lot of stuff for us to do. There would be six of us in one office and none of us had anything to do.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe sure to have tasks for interns if you're asking for them.

A very challenging and rewarding job.

AWS1 (Former Employee)
Patuxent River, MD

I worked at US Navy full-time for more than 8 years

ProsSupport and defend the Constitution.
College tuition assistance is available to most.
Get to travel the world and see interesting places.

ConsLong hours including weekends and holidays when on deployment.
A lot of time spent at sea away from family and friends.

Advice to Senior ManagementConnect more with the enlisted people that goes for Chiefs and Officers. I had the privilege of being aircrew so I felt like there was always communication flow for us, but I heard almost every time I talked with other rates that they felt left out of the loop on what was wanted from the Chiefs and Officers.
