I worked at US Small Business Administration as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Open environment with very effective supervisors who get the job done without micromanaging every little issue.

    Cons

Some of the lower level employees (i.e. analysts & such) are hardly effective at best and a few of the contract workers are not held accountable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Weed out the employees who are just "along for the ride".

I have been working at US Small Business Administration full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great Mission - to help Small Businesses
    Many dedicated employees

    Cons

Inefficient due to too unproductive employees negatively affecting the environment . Management is afraid to address performance and conduct issues with under-performing and inappropriate employees contributing to the toxic and inefficient work environment. This behavior is tolerated and perpetuated because the SBA has a known reputation for settling the lawsuits for employees that sue even if the case is baseless thus creating a reward system for inefficiency and toxic behavior.
The abuse of the system is causing an overwhelming backlog of these cases. It currently take 2-3 years for a case to be heard because there are so many cases.
Poor performer who cannot get jobs anywhere else stay with bad attitudes and block the path for others to replace them and for promotions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop settling lawsuits that reward toxic employees and require the Legal staff to do their jobs and be responsible to the American public that is paying their salaries. It would only take a few going all the way to court and receiving the appropriate rulings to reduce the backlog and discourage the gold diggers.

    Pros

    Cons

Sometimes with travel problems, dealing with airline cancellations, delays, rental cars unavailability and moving luggage at a moments notice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at US Small Business Administration full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Commaraderie, rewarding opportunity to help nation's disaster victims, excellent time-off policies, this is a job that allows you to work decent hours when there are not huge disasters to be dealt with.

    Cons

Always the threat of being laid off, management not very personable or effective, during times of big disasters (like Katrina) you may work up to 70 hours a week for lengthy periods of time. During slower times, workload can be so low that it is boring.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to do the jobs that you ask your employees to do. Get more involved with your employees...most management doesn't ever leave their office to converse with the non-managerial staff.
