Not too optimistic about the future of this place...

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsNice building, gym, and cafeteria. Some people on the digital side are forward thinking, but the dinosaurs make it very difficult for them to make any positive impact

ConsLack of clear strategy, terrible corporate culture, benefits were bad, and got worse with new healthcare plans, resistance to change.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey are very out of touch with the employees. You need to share a strategy going forward that people can rally around

Meh..Overrated, Beautiful Building on the outside, nothing much else on the inside.

    Finance (Current Employee)

ProsGood Work/Life Balance, nice cafeteria, decent job security

ConsLocation, Miserable management, Bad Morale, Average Salary, Generic Benefits, not much potential for growth in my department.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake time to improve morale, and continue to coach employees. Also start cross training employees to make them more efficient and versatile instead of keeping them in set defined roles with no opportunity to grow professionally within the company.

Was a great place early 2000's

    Marketing Analyst (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsGreat to have on your resume
    Meet notable clients
Great work friends - if they don't stab you in the back
    I loved what I did

ConsBrought in a bunch of MBC execs, who then brought in a bunch of ex Conde Nasty execs. Proceeded to make work a living hell. Everyone was scared, back stabbing, jealousy, poor morale.

Advice to Senior ManagementWake up and realize your bullying tactics don't work. Treat the employee, who have been there for a length of time with respect. They've been there, done that, so can probably tell you what will and won't work. Especially those out in the field.

    Company review

    Senior Editor (Current Employee)
    McLean, VA

ProsWorking for a national media outlet is exciting. Physical work space is exceptionally nice and has a fabulous gym.

ConsI am one of the scores of people who took a buyout last year so my comments reflect how things were when I left, which was dismal. Radical cutbacks and layers of new management have created a culture of desperation and overwork. Concerns about quality have disappeared in favor of quantity of output. Lean and mean is an understatement.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop slashing newsroom staff, invest in content creators (reporters!) and pay as much attention to quality as quantity.

Not if they paid me double

    Marketing Coordinator (Former Employee)

    ProsRegular hours. Great immediate boss.

ConsConstant furloughs. Workforce reductions. Not investing in employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementToo many Indian chiefs and not enough Indians. You need to shed more top management and focus on line labor. They are being stretched to the limits with the cuts. Operations are not getting done. Very inefficient practices.

I was a founder of the newspaper in 1982, gave them 30 years of loyal service, then was discarded like trash for money.

    Senior Editor (Former Employee)
    McLean, VA

ProsUsed to be a good company

ConsDuplicitous, incompetent management. They treat employees like garbage and make up for all their business mistakes by punishing or firing employees who actually do the work.

Advice to Senior ManagementLoyalty matters. Just shedding older workers and hiring young neophytes is not a recipe for success. Cutting expenses, including workers, is not how you grow. It just buys you a couple more years. Come up with a real plan (although I do not believe you are really capable of this) then invest in it.
