  5.

Great pay but not worth it. Put in long hours just to get laid off while the CEO makes millions.

    I worked at USEC

    Pros

Pay. That's about the only pro I can think of after 7 years with this company.

    Cons

Too many chiefs and not enough indians. No room for advancement unless you are a suck up. Rotating shift. Greedy CEO. Lots of drama all of the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most management didn't even deserve to be in management. They just sucked up to the right people. Management was very catty and talked about employees behind their backs. Always causing friction. It would be great if you would cut all of that crap out. If you want your employees to respect you, respect them first.

    Pros

It has been a good job for many years

    Cons

They are closing their only running enrichment plant in Paducah, and have filed for bankruptcy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't close your only running enrichment plant and waste money on the test plant in piketon.

    Pros

Pay is good, good benefits, they don't care when or if you come to work.

    Cons

There is no encouragement for continued education. They have no set policy on showing up for work - what time or anything. They do not ackowledge you for a job well done. The only way to get ahead is to suck up to upper management. Upper management is not well educated, many of the employees have more education than the management team. They have no sellable product, their only source of income is DOE even tho it is supposed to be "private".

    Pros

Wonderful co-workers and management. Safety is always first priority. Everyone is free to espress their ideas and concerns without fear of criticism.

    Cons

Pay is less than competetive. Outgoing employees are not replaced, leaving more work for those who remain.

A good company to learn about the nuclear fuel cycle and energy industry in general, but has a very uncertain future.

I worked at USEC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Talented, smart people. Decent salary, 401K and benefits. Great individual offices. Good gym and underground parking. Early release on days prior to major holiday long weekends.

    Cons

A company struggling to carve out a viable future in the uranium enrichment sector. No workplace flexibility or telecommuting. Competes globally, but not especially global in terms of geographic presence or culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get savvier on the DC lobbying front because the company is facing an uphill battle against the competition.

Current Employee - Engineer III in Piketon, OH
Current Employee - Engineer III in Piketon, OH

I have been working at USEC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay for the southern Ohio region with low cost of living, low crime, and quiet neighborhoods, and benefits are good also. Coworkers laid back and friendly. Good training and travel policy, for engineering group at least. Job assignments are somewhat interesting but not as challenging as a national lab.

    Cons

There is uncertainty about survival of the company for the next couple of years. Some of the physical structures and buildings are aging. The faucet-water is brown and water-jugs are brought in. Nearest big city is 45 or 90 minutes away, depending on where you live. The area close to the plant is a poor Appalachian.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They might have done a better job in communicating to, and working with, the DOE to secure the loan guarantee in 2009, in order to avoid using this "co-operative agreement" or whatever one calls it. But considering the extreme political motivation of the Obama administration I'm sure not a lot of people could have done better.
