Pros
this is a great company to worjk for. They have great pay and growth opportunity. They also have great mdeical benifits.
Cons
One of the bad partts is that this compnay has a bad reputation for not paying overtime this is something you will hear alot.
Advice to Senior Management
My asvice to management at S=USF hoolland qwould be to keep doing the great job they have been doing for so long.
Pros
Worked with good who wanted to do what is right for the company.
Cons
Constant pressure from the terminal manager to push initatives and goals without getting directly involved by sending emails. Everything was on the supervisors and no one else. They are ones who are accountable for EVERYTHING, not the dock workers or drivers.
You send an email to your manager about things and then it is replied back with everyone copied in. Didn;t seem like a private conversation.
The technology is not there. They haven't upgrade computer systems in what seems like decades.
Terminal manager does want to work with the union employees. Grievances were constant costing the company money and time because the manager was not following the rules of the contract.
Didn't seem like there was any career oppurtunity. No one seemed to move up from the terminal. Felt like a dead end job.
Advice to Senior Management
Invest in current technology (I know it is hard with the situation with the parent company YRC). Terminal managers should be able to communicate effectively will all employees regardless if they are union or front line management.
Pros
compared to most other freight lines, Holland focused more on palletized freight, which made for an easier workday
Cons
productive workers were overworked while the slack ones were allowed to slide (symptoms of a union workforce, unfortunately)
Advice to Senior Management
ditch the union and create a top of the line workforce by expecting the best and paying them well
too many freight lines are too lazy to invest in this most vital portion of their company, and that's why everybody has to give 75% and 80% discounts to get business
if you truly have a quality product, people will pay for it
Pros
Good pay and benefits, union job security, great team of drivers to work with, pride of work, assigned equipment.
Cons
Management apathy, a week at a time on the road for open board drivers, difficulty in getting truck repaired in a timely fashion.
Advice to Senior Management
Better communication between middle management and labor. Respect for labor. At least exhibit an attitude that local management cares about the company more than their own personal gain. An adherence to company policy at the local management level.
Pros
The benefits package was great.
Cons
Within 2 months of accepting the job I was given the responsibilities of 4 other Maintenance coordinators who had been fired. There was no compensation for the additional responsibility.
Advice to Senior Management
Communicate with your employees and remember that too many chef's spoil the soup.
It does not make sense to have 3 managers over one employee
Pros
BU environment, team work, friendly co-workers and management
Cons
feedback regarding performance on a regular basis
Advice to Senior Management
provide feedback and updates to employees
Pros
Its a fast paced environment and it stays pretty busy the days go really fast. It's exciting talking on the phone all day
Cons
Sometimes it gets old to deal with unruly mean customers. Some of the people you have to deal with all day are rude
Advice to Senior Management
Management is pretty good at USF but they are a little rude and like kind of snoody sometimes they come off that way if you dont know them very well
Pros
Great company with great service and benefits. Compensation was above average as well as the health benefit package. Opportunities for advancement.
Cons
Company is experiencing an economic downturn. Transportation sector is down and this company if impacted financially do to the outdated cost structure for the union driver pool. This will be very difficult to reverse and be competitive in the market place.
Advice to Senior Management
Company is in a very difficult spot due to the duplication of services within the YRC organization. I think the company should differentiate themselves from the rest of the YRC companies as a premier service provider, by offering am and pm guaranteed services.
Pros
The pay is very high for the industry benefits are free
Cons
There current financial difficulty, right now is primary
Advice to Senior Management
Quit sell the company off to qualified people who can run it
Pros
the pay is great as well as benefit package
Cons
uncertainty of when and if they will close or survive due to yrc owning them
Advice to Senior Management
look at your workers as an asset instead of a liability and treat them as a team member instead of a rival.
