Been here over a year, good money, not much time off.

    Factory (Current Employee)
    Gypsum, OH

ProsThe pay is GREAT! Benefits are great! Two weeks vacation after a year (if you take advantage of buying a week as offered). Talk of going to 4 shifts that would swing, 12 hour shifts, 3 days on/4 days off then 4 days on/ 3 days off. Would then have every other weekend off! Would work half a year. Schedule set for a year ahead of time.

ConsNo weekends off. Sometimes work 11-17 days straight (with a day off here and there). Tough on family life.

Advice to Senior ManagementGo to the 4 shifts swing. The set schedules would be a HUGE moral builder with employees!!!

This is a company that has been stable and growing.

    Property Management (Current Employee)
    Atlanta, GA

ProsThey don't throw out the baby with the bath water (so to speak). In other words, if a person doesn't work out in one position they will give them a chance in another provided that person shows the desire to work it out.

ConsCommunication is one the biggest problems. Communication between corporate to corporate, field to field and corporate to field. This area needs a lot of work. Reviews are not done and raises are far and few between.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunication should be better, reviews should be done on a regular basis and raises should be given on a minimum of an annual basis when the employee has shown to be valuable with a strong work ether, team player and produces time after time.

Working for the USG has been challenging but satisfying

    Attorney (Current Employee)

ProsIt offers a great work life balance.

ConsThere is virtually no upward mobility.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe 'kiss-up-spit-down" practice backfires, so managers would be better off treating the staff with respect and courtesy.

    Great people. Process laden.

    Applications Management (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsI worked with some of the best people ever in this company, free with knowledge sharing, professional in their fields, and tons of fun socially.

ConsThey over-reacted to Sarbanes Oxley and locked the company down so tight with process that they squelched creativity. Micro-management abounds. The bad economy creates a tense atmosphere with annual layoffs.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou could get a lot more out of your employees if you let go of the reins.

    Great people, so-so environment

    (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsThe people and networking experiences made USG Corp great. If you put yourself out there, managers, directors, VP's, etc. are available to meet and discuss career goals, direction....even if you don't work in that department or business unit. When the housing market rebounds, USG environment should improve.

ConsMany layoffs and minimal (one) merit increases during the downturn. USG has a new strategy and the attitude of Sr. Mgmt is, "get on board or get out." Subsequently, individuals are hesistant to give an opinion or their thoughts on the new ideas. I believe HR is often inept and doesn't always have the back of the employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen business picks up for USG, reward the employees that stuck around. Get back to promoting from within and giving training opportunities for employees to move around.

Good company but perhaps wait until the housing industy improves

    Manager (Current Employee)

ProsUSG is a good company with strong emphasis on building relationships among customers and employees. While the job often requires long or unusual hours, there is a strong belief in life balance. It is a great company for training and when the economy there will be ample opportunities for advancement.

ConsThe current economy makes advancement and employment, especially for those not in an engineering field can be risky. Must be willing to relocate to receive advancement within the manufacturing management positions.

Advice to Senior ManagementStay the course but never forget the values of your people are your best assets.

    Good place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

Proswork life balance is good, opportunity to advance early in career is great, pay good in middle US and South, but behind scale in NE and Calif, good people to work with

Conslots of relocation to advance, corporate can be detached from field

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to focus on streamlining all areas of organization, not just the field operations
