I worked at USG as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

HQ is an incredibly nice facility.
    Great, kind people
The perks and pay (even as an intern!) were great

    Cons

My particular manager rarely checked in with me and did not contribute positively to my experience, but that cannot be said about the company as a whole

I worked at USG as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

You're given lots of responsibilities and projects which are actually implemented and used. You get to work on projects that may take millions of dollars and you get to work with a great team of engineers. As an intern we qualified for overtime over 40 hours even though we were paid as salary. This was a very safety conscious company that was great to work for.

    Cons

If you work here full time it's a small town and a small office. You'll have to move across the country a few times to move up in the engineering ranks.

    They treat employees well.
When the economy is good and goals are met, employees are rewarded.
Employees are great to work with.

    Cons

Sometimes when there is an urgent need to fill a role, they hire contractors and/or employees that don't meet expectations.

    Pros

    Very Supportive Manager
    Good Learning Experience
    Good Benefits
Company takes great care of you
Possibility for advancement is there if you are willing to work hard and wait
    Best job I ever had

    Cons

My positive experience is a result of not only the work that I did there but also because of the manager I worked for. He was very fair, supportive and positive. But it was my understanding that some managers in other parts of the country were very difficult to work for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is my understanding that my former manager has recently been promoted and I think he is now in charge of USGs biggest retail national account. My advice to management is that you should try to follow his management style, you will create a more positive atmosphere and will get better results from your retail sales team.

I have been working at USG full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work-Life balance at USG is not something to which lip service is paid, but is real. This is rare. Also, USG's employees are generally more agreeable and easier to work with than anywhere else that I have worked. The atmosphere is collaberative and cooperative. This is a very solid company that has been around for over 100 years, and is positioned to do very well once construction's rebound gets some legs

    Cons

Compensation is average. As is common in Industry, employees' workloads are pretty high. Given how process-oriented IT has become, this can be a source of frustration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have a lot of confidence in upper management. Keep it up.

I have been working at USG full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are more communications than ever before from the executive committee which definitely helps motivate employees. Lately our teams plan to win has created our own company recession recovery which has motivated all employees from senior executives to the operator level. We have seen our first pay raise in some time as promised and looking forward to the future with great faith in our executive leaders.

    Cons

Some USG location seem slow to adapt to new technology but getting better.
Still have unrealistic deadlines to meet which stunt project growth due to manpower shortages.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue the communications and try to speed up the adaptation of new technologies at all plants.
