    Pros

The pay is GREAT! Benefits are great! Two weeks vacation after a year (if you take advantage of buying a week as offered). Talk of going to 4 shifts that would swing, 12 hour shifts, 3 days on/4 days off then 4 days on/ 3 days off. Would then have every other weekend off! Would work half a year. Schedule set for a year ahead of time.

    Cons

No weekends off. Sometimes work 11-17 days straight (with a day off here and there). Tough on family life.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go to the 4 shifts swing. The set schedules would be a HUGE moral builder with employees!!!

    Pros

Great People. Great Product. Excellent work life balance (if you are in the right department). A family atmosphere. Located downtown right behind the Metra train station. Pay is OK, not the best, but not the worst. Lots of extra activities, focus groups, lunch and learns, weight loss challenges…things to benefit the employees. Great perks.

    Cons

USG rarely gets rid of people who have proven to no longer be valuable to the company. In many departments these "slacker" or OLD heads hold key positions. This is demoralizing to up and comings and doesn't give you the warm an fuzzes about promotions. Career paths are better than previous years, but a long way to go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't forget about the little guys who actually do the work.

I worked at USG as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

For engineering majors, great opportunity for fast advancement through the ranks and many opportunities to travel throughout the US by transferring to numerous plant locations. Reward superior performance and loyalty with quick advancement.

    Cons

All engineering jobs lead to management positions. If you enjoy design and applying your degree, there are less roads to advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider hiring experienced engineers for mining engineer positions.

    Pros

    They treat employees well.
When the economy is good and goals are met, employees are rewarded.
Employees are great to work with.

    Cons

Sometimes when there is an urgent need to fill a role, they hire contractors and/or employees that don't meet expectations.

I worked at USG full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good place if you are planning to retire in less than five years.
You can be invisible and avoid work if you keep your mouth shut during meetings.
War rooms are management staff having free lunch and surfing the internet.
Able to negotiate salary and 3-4 weeks PTO if you are coming from consulting.

    Cons

Company income based on only a few products.
Directors or above are robbing the company.
    Traditional sweat shop concept.
    Management is a joke.
Preferred hiring outside contractors and no internal promotions unless you have connections.
No merit increase for a few years
Only lower level employees doing all the work.
    Dead end career path.
Try to run IT as a business but ending up as a joke because of management failure.
Other departments refused to work with IT because IT is always over promised and under delivered. Plus most staff is clueless of what they are doing because of high turnover rate.
    Benefits are going downhill.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work (#sarcastic). Enjoy while you can.

I have been working at USG full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Reasonable pay. Nice offices

    Cons

Managers are more concerned about their own jobs and looking politically correct, than about doing the right thing. There is little support for employees. They are going thru huge changes as they try to "outsource" everything. I would advise waiting a few years before working for this organization. Hopefully they will soon realize their mistakes and go back to basics were hard work is acknowledged and rewarded. They need to get rid of the mid-level managers that, as I said above, are more concerned with being politically correct as opposed to doing the correct thing.
