I have been working at USG full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent pay..paid weekly..meet some cool people

    Cons

Where do i begin..Usg east chicago plant is the worst..in board and jt deparments they hire all LAZY PEOPLE and they do nothing at work for 12 hours.but they try to use the hell out of people who do try to come to work n work. they equipment is old n breaks down all day. Everyday they have the same problems or new ones.makes a 12hour day so hard..they dont care at all..mangement sucks..Hr doesnt care.the formen sit in the office all day on facebook n craiglist. instead of getting the lazy ppl to work.the current supervisor is scary..Sacred of his employees the ppl who dont be working or doing anything all day he dont say anything to them but constatly tells the good workers to do everything..the department manager doesnt care either he runs several departments so he doesnt have time..no life to work balance.then you are told you have to work on a day you was off at the last minute..they pay should be higher to work here considering the equipment is out of date and breaks down all day long..everyone is scared to speak up if you do your a target..i would not try to get anyone to work here. WORST PLACE TO WORK..they treat ppl terrible.they dont train u properly they use to now training is relieving someone for break .something goes wrong that person doesnt even know what too do. they have their favorites..all the ppl who are lazy. i see why ppl who been here 10yrs or more come in and say they quit..this company needs to be fair n hire better ppl also if you are late all the time you wont get fired until you have been late about 30 times they dont stick to the policy. They dont listen to you and they dont care about you bottom line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do you know how the equipment runs in e.c. indiana..probably not huh? The hiring process needs to be more strict..hiring overweight ppl for jobs that reqiure ppl to do heavy lifting and being able to move fast but safetly is not good..and the lazy ppl why do usg keep these ppl who are non productive..someone needs to come out as a undercover boss to see whats going on..secert cameras need to be put up so it can be shown whos here to work and whos not..i dont mind working hard..thats what i come to work to do ..but y should i when the lazy ppl..is patted on the back all the time..REALLY USG REALLY??

I have been working at USG full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

It offers a great work life balance.

    Cons

There is virtually no upward mobility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The 'kiss-up-spit-down" practice backfires, so managers would be better off treating the staff with respect and courtesy.

I have been working at USG full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work-Life balance at USG is not something to which lip service is paid, but is real. This is rare. Also, USG's employees are generally more agreeable and easier to work with than anywhere else that I have worked. The atmosphere is collaberative and cooperative. This is a very solid company that has been around for over 100 years, and is positioned to do very well once construction's rebound gets some legs

    Cons

Compensation is average. As is common in Industry, employees' workloads are pretty high. Given how process-oriented IT has become, this can be a source of frustration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have a lot of confidence in upper management. Keep it up.

    Pros

Not a stressful job at all. Often work together with your clients identifying new projects and identify potential wall board demand

    Cons

Not many , future potential for advancement not as great as other companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't forget the people who act as foot soldiers . We represent the company at the mist basic level.

I worked at USG full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I worked with some of the best people ever in this company, free with knowledge sharing, professional in their fields, and tons of fun socially.

    Cons

They over-reacted to Sarbanes Oxley and locked the company down so tight with process that they squelched creativity. Micro-management abounds. The bad economy creates a tense atmosphere with annual layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You could get a lot more out of your employees if you let go of the reins.

    I worked at USG full-time

    Pros

The people and networking experiences made USG Corp great. If you put yourself out there, managers, directors, VP's, etc. are available to meet and discuss career goals, direction....even if you don't work in that department or business unit. When the housing market rebounds, USG environment should improve.

    Cons

Many layoffs and minimal (one) merit increases during the downturn. USG has a new strategy and the attitude of Sr. Mgmt is, "get on board or get out." Subsequently, individuals are hesistant to give an opinion or their thoughts on the new ideas. I believe HR is often inept and doesn't always have the back of the employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When business picks up for USG, reward the employees that stuck around. Get back to promoting from within and giving training opportunities for employees to move around.
