I worked at UT Southwestern Medical Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good benefits, competitive pay, good work life balance.

    Cons

There is a lot of bureaucracy within the University. Movement is very slow to get things accomplished. Once hired at a given pay grade it is difficult to advance. They will hire someone from outside the University at a higher pay than current employees with a proven track record.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When filling an open position consider internal applicants on even footing with external applicants. Internal applicants have a proven track record of success within the company.

I have been working at UT Southwestern Medical Center full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

UTSWMC has some of the best biomedical researchers in the US. Although the quality of postdoctoral training may vary based on the PI, the institution provides a great, competitive environment. Generally the labs are well funded, well supported and provide plenty of opportunities to excel.

    Cons

The compensation packages are "OK". Most postdocs are paid by the NIH recommended scale. Most of the labs are very competitive, so expect to spend between 70-80 hours in the lab every week.As with any state employer, there are no performance based incentives or perks.

I have been working at UT Southwestern Medical Center full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

retirement, good healthcare, and alot of PTO given as your years with the company increase.

    Cons

Overworked in most offices, always understaffed due to budget restrains, and very low annual increases given to the majority of the employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

treat your employees the way you would like your OWN children to be treated in the work place. With respect, kindness, and appreciation. Hiring enough workers to get the job DONE ON TIME instead of overloading staff and causing health issues: hypertension, strokes/heart attacks, .migranes.

I worked at UT Southwestern Medical Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Again, the employees here are some of the nicest people you will ever work with. People come here expecting the ship to be run by a first-class captain, but will quickly learn that it is run by a deck-hand in a suit.

    Cons

The leadership has poor management skills. They treat you like a position and not a person. This is a very stagnant work environment. Don't pass up the opportunity to work here if you don't have anything else on the table, but if you do, take your other option.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead by example, not by intimidation.

    Pros

There are plenty of opportunities here to engage in scientific discussion and perform cutting-edge research. There are also a number of excellent career-related resources available to postdocs.

    Cons

There is a lack of variety of food choices available on-campus, and all food-service closes early (i.e. for people who work late into the evening, it makes finding dinner a little bit challenging).
