Pros
A great place to do science.
Cons
It's Academia and you take a vow of poverty
Advice to Senior Management
Research is what put UTSW on the map. More support is needed.
Pros
Professional good work environment fairly competetive good benefits good continuining education credits good feedback from superiors good peer relationships and environment
Cons
Often have situations which have political ramifications also there is a lot of red tape with regard to when things need to be done
Advice to Senior Management
Have better ways of resolving situations without having political ramifications and to decrease issues with regard to red tape situations
Pros
Benefits and stability, I can't really think of anything else positive to say.
Cons
Very little career advancement opportunities, management is very ineffective and promotions here are given on a time served basis rather than proven performance. Employees pay for parking ($300 a year), staff are always told there are tight budgets going on yet new physicians are always being hired (this is incredibly frustrating) and there is no proper training/education for this position. Coordinators are always thrown under the bus from their PIs who are the irresponsible ones. Don't bother going to HR for feedback or support as their job is to support management, filing for a grievance will make it difficult for you to transfer anywhere and you will even be told this.
Pros
Stable employer, provides benefits, deep discounts on mass transit
Cons
Very low pay, no Advancement opportunities, no concern for employee grievances, hard work neither recognized nor rewarded. Manager blew off a couple of significant "above and beyond" tasks in my performance evaluation because I volunteered to do them--it wasn't my job. That's the mentality you deal with there.
Advice to Senior Management
Just because the rank and file employees aren't the ones who generate the money doesn't mean we don't matter. Stop treating workers like you can always replace them and they're a dime a dozen. You wanted so badly to be named a top employer and sent out memos encouraging us to answer the survey if we got one. I got one and I answered it... honestly. You have no idea how very far away from being thought of as a top employer you are. And please stop lying about compensation. I was told the "range" of my position as if there was a chance of increasing it. Only later did I find out that just to get to midpoint practically requires an act of Congress. And your "we're not giving merit increases because of the budget, but please welcome these 15 new upper level executives" is as insulting to our intelligence as you total compensation statement. You can't add in the money you have to pay in payroll taxes as if it's part of our wages. If you're wanting us to compare the number, ever employer has to pay the same thing so it's null. Get it?
Pros
Good, fully paid health benefits. Decent starting salary. You practically have to murder someone to get fired.
Cons
Very poor management. I've worked in the IT Department of many other hospitals around the country. UT has the absolute most disorganized group of management I've ever experienced. Very political here. If you smile and agree to contribute to chaos they'll like you, but if you even politely offer suggestions of ways to work "smarter not harder" you will be shot down so fast its not even funny. There is very little opportunity for growth if any at all. They claimed they couldnt get us our 1.5% raise due to budget cuts, yet they hired 15 new employees. Management will blatantly lie to you during your interview and during the time you are employeed. Forget having a family, social life, or any other obligations in life, this place will work you to death if you are salaried. I'm in an employment contract because they paid for me to relocate here. Wish they had been honest about the job description, I'd love to leave now but cant. I've heard they hire people from out of state because they have a bad reputation in Dallas and cant get anyone to work for them. Management will never tell you what the expect of you, never train you and basically never communicate with you. If you want a place to slack off and get by this is it, if you want a real career with advancement and a good work environment, please by pass this place!
Advice to Senior Management
Communicate with other management teams and employees. Take into consideration that people do have lives outside of work and be honest of the job description when hiring people.
Pros
Good benefits, good work-life balance. Close to hospital and clinics. Convienient for doctors appointments if you need them. Easily accessible.
Cons
Poor upper management, HR does not listen to constructive criticism. Lots of politics and management likes to create drama. People who do the talk and tell management what they want to hear get the promotion, not based on real contribution.
Advice to Senior Management
Reward your employees based on performance not on something else.
Promote good ethical values and professionalism in the workplace. Walk the walk not just talk the talk.
Pros
Benefits, Salary increases, work environment, great work/ life
Cons
Proffessional growth, advancement opportunities, set employee goals so that the employee has a chance at getting better raises
Advice to Senior Management
Need to be willing to allow employees to move to other positions
Pros
there isGood job stability here.
Cons
Once you're in the system advancement this hard. They will hire from outside at a higher pay first.
Pros
Building a new Medical Center
Cons
The hours are not good from 9:30 - 6 pm and being the only one left in your department !!!
Pros
UT Southwestern has great resources for research, many renowned scientists and a lot of opportunities for collaborations.
The administration is very efficient.
Postdoctoral Office and Postdoctoral Association are very active at representing postdocs' interests. PDA also organizes many career development events, as well as social events.
The benefits (health, retirement etc.) at UT Southwestern are also quite good.
Cons
There are hardly any opportunities for career advancement.
Coming from New York, I really don't care much about Dallas.
Like most of the hospital neighborhoods, the one around UT Southwestern Medical Center is unsafe.
The culture at the institution, as well as in the city as a whole, is "get your job done well and go home", there is not much socializing between colleagues, no sense of community.
Advice to Senior Management
I really don't have any suggestions to the leadership at UT Southwestern Medical Center other than trying to create the sense of community at the institution.
