Former Employee - Registered Nurse in Charlottesville, VA

    Pros

Flexibility with assignments, worked with competent staff, and I was usually sent to a variety of units to get excellent working experience on.

    Cons

The upper management would often issue impractical rules or change what was already working fairly well for the staff. Most of the nursing units were understaffed on the night shift.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the floor staff and don't skimp on staffing for the nursing units.

    Pros

The people were good and the managers were very professional.

    Cons

IT services left much to be desired; I was unable to access the employee email or payroll systems without involving a manager and several calls to IT.

    Pros

good cafeteria. nice town to live in.

    Cons

Administration doesn't care about staff, especially nurses.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

don't be so cheap. overhaul nursing admin- all the nurses are quitting. we can't take care of patients without nurses. they are the heart of the hospital- and protect the patients from physicians who are not paying atttention

    Doesn't Recommend

Current Employee - Speech-Language Pathologist in Charlottesville, VA

    Pros

Good benefits and salaries. Access to experts. Great continuing education opportunities.

    Cons

Management does little to address problems between employees ("bullies" and "gossips" negatively impact teamwork and atmosphere of respect). Tight work space. Complicated and personally offensive annual performance review process (anonymous co-workers rate your performance, even if not in same profession).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase transparency in performance review process. Solicit feedback from employees regarding team morale and cohesiveness. Address issues with employees creating a toxic work environment .

    Pros

Charlottesville and the surrounding area are beautiful. Some dedicated individuals within the health system. Sense of tradition and history in Mr. Jefferson's University. Health care delivery is very good.

    Cons

Poorly run system that appears to be reactionary to current trends rather than anticipatory. Lack of creativity and vision at all levels of management hamper the institution. Cultural norms against changes make it hard for the institution to position itself for the coming changes in medicine. Big gap betweeen what management says it values and the types of leaders the institution promotes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have your work cut out for you. The coming decade in medicine will bring some of the most pressing challenges the profession has ever seen. I hope you can persuade all stakeholders to see that change is good.
