    Pros

Great working enviroment for the most part. QA was willing to go the extra mile to help out. Production personel were insightful and helpful. Shipping Recieving team were great and never let us down.

    Cons

Consistently clueless management team who are lazy or inept at crucial times. No real desire for management to listen or communicate between each other. The worst parts accountability program ever experienced. Lack of any real experience by direct engineering team as contract engineers knew more than their ATS counterparts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire management, production and engineering teams that have the skills necessary to do the job!

    Pros

Great work environment. Great corporate culture. Good pay. Good benefits. The core product has a great reputation in the defense industry around the world.

    Cons

Employment cycles are dependent upon contract awards. It is easy to get let go if government contracts are not being awarded. Corporate pressures to share profit drives poor decision making when times are lean.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to middle line managers. Do not allow the UK to drive decision making based on profit sharing with HQ.

    Pros

The worker bees. Many were loyal workers trying to get things done. Cafe offerings of free sodas, coffee, fruits, breakfast cereals. Benefits were overall higher level.

    Cons

The new office location was a bit too far for most employees. Very little product diversification and not much room for career growth.

I worked at Ultra Electronics Advanced Tactical Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Free soft drinks and fruit
Good ethics (for the most part) compared to the big boys
    Flexible work schedule
    Interesting work
    Decent pay and benefits package

    Cons

No growth opportunities and no technical career path
    No leadership from senior management.
Senior management good old boys club, very cliquish with lots of group-think.

This used to be a good company to work for but things have changed.

Management became complacent after many years of growth. They are now in panic mode after losing several important contracts and experiencing declining revenues from their flagship product with nothing new to replace it and provide long term growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Group-think is not necessarily a good.
    Better start polishing those resumes.

Great people working hard in a difficult business climate

I have been working at Ultra Electronics Advanced Tactical Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

In prior years when the business was doing better there were excellent opportunities for personal growth and the company really invested a lot of money in their people. I have found the people who work there are great and that they really care about each other. The work is probably much more interesting than your typical job and the people who work there are passionate about doing what is right for the customer (war fighter). There are a lot of talented people there, especially in engineering. Overall I feel fortunate for 7 plus great years.

    Cons

The biggest con of course is that the business is struggling, especially when compared to its prior success. I attribute this mostly to the difficult business climate that is currently in the defense industry. Unlike what others have said about the company not investing in new products, the company actually has invested a lot in new products. The problem is the company has not yet found a great new product that can drive growth, finding the next big thing is harder than you think. I think business development in the past has been a big weakness and the company is paying for it now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I do not agree with the suggestions some others have made that a new senior management team is needed. I actually think that would be the final nail in the coffin because the culture is what keeps the good people around. My advice would be investing more in business development.

I worked at Ultra Electronics Advanced Tactical Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Ultra Electronics Advanced Tactical Systems used to be a great place to work. Christmas parties, shrimp boils, family picnics, baseball games, sports leagues, networking events, health fairs, impromptu gatherings and team building events, catered lunches, salary increases, annual reviews and annual bonuses. Very smart and talented people passionate about trying to make a difference for those who put it directly on the line everyday. But something changed.

    Cons

The business is struggling. Really struggling. No real innovation to speak of. No products that are making an impact. No real business being developed. No real sales being made that is a true impact to the bottom line. The workforce continues to shrink as the company has lost its edge, its focus and its way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you are doing. Or not.

I worked at Ultra Electronics Advanced Tactical Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Very relaxed environment. The pay was great and much better than other big defense contractor companies. Flexible working schedule. Free soft-drinks, water, breakfast, fruits and coffee. What else could you ask for? I had an office to sit, an environment to code and got paid competitively. No regrets working here. The company went through a tough time winning contracts. It's the up and down of the business. Nothing lasts forever. There are a lot of good engineers at Ultra ATS.

    Cons

None. What else can this company do with a very limited product lines? You cannot ask for more benefits or money from this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please offer beers to employee every Friday. This will ensure higher productivity.

I have been working at Ultra Electronics Advanced Tactical Systems full-time

    Pros

Talented employees who truly want to make a difference.

    Cons

Sadly, many amazing people (50%) are no longer here. The biggest asset and positive force for change and innovation has now left or soon will be, taking with it the very life and energy taken for granted for so many years. What's now left behind are dark rooms, empty halls and even darker and emptier hearts in those of us still here for now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Nothing.

I worked at Ultra Electronics Advanced Tactical Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There are some very good people who work a the director and below level at this company. You will establish some great relationships if you can manage to keep your job.
    Free coffee and soft drinks

    Cons

Lack of leadership at the top! By far the biggest issue at this company.
A management team that has zero leadership experience outside of this company.
The senior management team (SMT) does not listen to the rank and file and those who really know the market.
A SMT that is out of touch with their market and customers
The "ATS way" is not the best way to run a company.
    A very political office environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice is to the leadership at Ultra. You need to make a change in the leadership at ATS. This company is not going to grow or survive with the current leadership in place. The company grew due to OEF and OIF and not due to its products or business plan. What wasn't talked about was how ATS was actually losing market share while growing. That should have raised many flags.

ATS 5.0 should include a new leader at the top.

I worked at Ultra Electronics Advanced Tactical Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The salaries were exceptional. Especially for the Senior Management Team.

    Cons

    Old Girls Club.

I almost hesitate to call it that because it's parent name, the Old Boys Club. Which although is notoriously nepotistic and arrogant, at least has the reputation of accomplishing something and being productive. ATS is the opposite. If managers weren't spending generous blocks of time writing and reviewing the bi-annual appraisals, they're distracted by the "agile" office and seating arrangements. Where a phone call is either overheard by a dozen individuals or the environment is so noisy that only half of the conversation is meaningful.

The culture is cliquish and cut-throat. And the biggest problem I had was that the clique I'm talking about only benefit is to those who care nothing about producing anything besides politics and only serves to satisfy their need to feel elite. Of course I can't get into specifics, but trust me that these are some of the worst people you may ever encounter.

The executive management team only cares about their status and filling their pockets for as long as they can. And being a member of the President's Club, of course. It's hard to believe that they've been able to keep their positions with all the turmoil and sinking profits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Take the money and run.
