Stay Away from Unica/IBM Unless you're desperate!!!

Software Engineer (Former Employee) Waltham, MA

Pros* some very nice people - and that's about it. It was better under just Unica, but most of those people (who were smart) have left for Neolane and other competitors - IBM has become a nightmare.

ConsIBM Culture. (do as we say - and then MAYBE you'll get a paycheck) Money is always an issue here - whether you're in engineering, sales (even worse), or development - getting your bonuses, commissions, etc is painful - and quite often you get NOTHING.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's too late quite frankly, those that are left are playing CYA with the IBM culture and will throw others under the bus in a hear beat to keep their jobs.

    Interesting

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Waltham, MA

ProsLots of smart people, interesting work to be done, rising company in the field, lots to learn from educated people

ConsStill a small company, recently bought out, not a lot of room for advancement, lots of old people, not young

Advice to Senior ManagementGet more young people

    Ok place to work.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Waltham, MA

ProsThe people are friendly, and there are ample opportunities for volunteering, there are company sponsored golf and softball leagues. Mediocrity is common. Yuchan Lee is CEO, he will succeed.

ConsSenior management does not communicate well with individual contributors. Communication and processes are not well defined. The bar is very low, and mediocrity is wicked common. Not enough career development; often, people are hired who have done a role and have no room for growth instead of hiring above people's experience so they growth to meet the challenge.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate with employees. Raise the bar. Hire people smarter than you. Make room for career growth. Given this, Yuchan Lee is a capable CEO who will not fail.

    Ok

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Waltham, MA

ProsAt Unica, there is a good work-life balance. Schedules can be flexible. The benefits are definitely above average.

ConsThe company has been shaky during this current recession. No real career growth. Communication could be much better. There is a constant growing-pains feeling with a lack of direction.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove the communication between groups. Stick to game plan and try to enforce it. It's one thing to have goals and another to follow through. Encourage employee development.

    Not yet an Agile company.

    Software Architect (Current Employee)

ProsWork/life balance (at least in this office). Employee Stock Purchase Plan is still a sweet deal.

ConsBureaucracy. Waste. Unequal compensation for the same work and same level of supervision. Senior management doesn't do nearly enough to communicate with people on the field/in the trenches.

Advice to Senior ManagementFrequently communicate with people at lower levels in the food chain in order to get their ideas on how to improve the company. Replace the arcane practice of performance reviews, which are actually bad practice according to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal.

Great people, interesting products, but prepare to experience growing pains.

Business Solutions Consultant (Current Employee) Waltham, MA

ProsGreat people, good location, interesting products, interesting market space - if you're into enterprise marketing, anyway! Good opportunity to move around career-wise; Unica is not afraid to let a good employee try on a new hat.

ConsConsultants get burned out very quickly. Not enough focus on training, either on new Unica products or on third-party technologies that Unica supports. Compensation average at best; mine is significantly below-market, despite good to excellent reviews, and my efforts to get it in-line with market have so far been fruitless. Poor communication from upper management to staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementWalk the walk with respect to claims that salaries are in-line with market and be willing to make adjustments to those salaries that are not. Better communication from upper management to staff is needed. Bring back the sabbatical.

Market leading company with a good future, but trouble with training and employee-manager relations.

Solution Consultant (Former Employee) Waltham, MA

ProsUnica is a market leader in their space with the ability to win just about any deal they walk into.
They are still a smallish company with family feel, so it's easy to get to know a good percentage of the people there.

ConsManagement doesn't make a priority of giving employee feedback, training, promotions, career advancment.
Training on new products is extremely poor.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend more time on your employees. Train them on new technologies and new products. Have a better new employee training program. Promote from within.
