    Pros

Unicon is one big family and I love that! My skills and ability are valued. Huge emphasis put on work/life balance which I appreciate and an open door policy for all managers makes it easy to voice concerns when they come up. This company takes care of their clients and their employees and you can't ask for more than that!

    Cons

As with all small companies, positions with 'titles' are few and far between (though merit increases, bonuses and cost of living increases are available so even without the title, the pay is good)

    Advice to Management

Keep putting your employees needs first and your doors open

    Pros

Worked as Software Developer in Java for more than a year.
Worked with an excellent team where Senior Developer as well as co-workers are always willing to help when you need. They gave Portlet Development Training/Spring Training classes at the beginning which was very useful and provided the experience needed to work on those frameworks at work.Learned lot of new frameworks and technologies. Great place to work if you are out of college and looking for a software development job.

    Cons

They don't easily promote you. Compensation is not high.

    Pros

Sales team, Owners, and the Sr. Dev's are very knowledgeable. Offers opportunity to work in consulting without a lot of travel. Casual dress at work. Good reputation within the Open Source development community. Fun quarterly parties, break room fruit / drinks. The clients in the education industry are extremely nice and reasonable to work with.

    Cons

There are a number of employees and management who lack substantive experience outside of Unicon, and a couple of key tenured employees are difficult to work with. Compensation can be on the low side, and the company does shrink and grow quite a bit based on the sales pipeline, so keep a good eye on your billable utilization.

    Advice to Management

Tenured employees should be held to the same behavior standards as others. Work to increase diversity. Use client feedback surveys to assist with evaluation and bonuses assessments.

    Pros

High Quality Co-Workers make all the difference. Company Owners have the employees best interests at heart - a rarity in the business world today. Interesting work and project - lots of opportunites to learn new things.

    Cons

Smaller Company - If you are looking to climb to the top of the corporate ladder and a VP title is important to you - this probably isn't the place for you as there are only a few spots at the top. But if you want to do your job, do it well and be appreciated and compensated, then give them a try.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

    Pros

The management at Unicon is very flexible with personal needs
Everyone is a joy to work with and very intelligent

    Cons

No long term goal "pay the mortgage" type of company
Hesitant to advance employees in position
    Hires externally before promoting internally

    Advice to Management

Look outside the portal world and consider consulting for different types of web apps, the talent is there but you should reach outside of the education portals and bring more money in elsewhere rather than laying people off. Also look more closely into promoting within the company before hiring outside.

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

Outside of management, the employees are great. There aren't too many employment options for software developers in Arizona, so usually it's toss-up between bad and worse. Unicon seems to know that and gets away with hiring great people at low pay, and treating them like crap.

    Cons

Management is clueless. They consist mostly of engineers with little to no skills in business. Marketing is extremely clueless.

    Advice to Management

Fire the marketing guy. Move quicker in making business decisions. Listen to employees and stop being snobs.
