I worked at Unigen as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I was able to learn skills relevant to what I would like to someday pursue while simultaneously honing and capitalizing on certain skills I already had. In terms of office culture, it is pretty friendly. For every clown there's someone who's too serious, but that seems pretty standard.

    Cons

To the best of my knowledge, there were not any cons that really affected me. Maybe the managers could be more responsive and the employees more proactive, but that's typical of anywhere.

I worked at Unigen full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The work is challenging, the designs are interesting, most of my peers were extremely professional and fun to work with

    Cons

Poor communication from management, poor benefits, don't expect company parties, team building parties, etc. even the lunch room and break rooms are bottom shelf. No severance pay! So be sure to have some cushion in case you are let go. When they terminate you, they remove the hard drive from your work station and don't tell you. So, you come into work the next day and can't figure out why your machine doesn't work. They don't have a due process policy in place, so if your manager decides he doesn't like you any more, that's it.

It can be extremely dysfunctional. It is really hard to get the specifications you need, sharing information appears to be discouraged.

The parking at the Fremont office is really tight...more employees than spaces, so people double park and can block you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Require engineering move to the Newark office and give a deadline. They need their own space and you are paying for a lot of empty cubicles.

Transition into new facilities could be smoother, Relocation of employees to begin working is very slow going.

    Pros

Good co-workers with positive attitude always makes work go by smoothly. Co-workers are a great resource for guidance and ensuring that all flows as scheduled. People are easy to talk to and honest once you get to know them.

    Cons

Opportunities for advancement are very limited unless you know someone in management that has some clout. English seems to be a second language for the majority of employees and this makes it difficult to communicate with some especially supervisors. Supervisors could do with more training and be more knowledgeable about the tasks that those they supervise are doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Practice promoting from within and nurturing current employees rather than resorting to new hires.

I have been working at Unigen full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Owners are truly honest and great people. Care for employees' well-being very much. Business are very stable, job security is not an issue at all. If the life balance is crucial to you, this is the right place for you. Always normal eight-hour work shift and management rarely requires overtime for exempt employees. Very minimum office politics. The CEO has a great vision and super smart and influential.

    Cons

I consider Unigen a little old fashion as far as the company culture and certain way of doing business. Because the owners are way too nice and kind, you will always wonder why some "bad" employees are still working here?! :)
Lacking leadership is the key problem. Current top management team can lead $500 million business but incapable of taking the company to next level. CEO has great vision and capability of obtaining more businesses but his management team failed to support. If Unigen could rebuild the top management team, COO step down, and acquire the right talent to lead the team, Unigen would definitely become the world-class company as the CEO expects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Re-build the top management team!

    Armed Robberies at Unigen

I have been working at Unigen full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Impressive manufacturing facility, capacity, and equipment in the Fremont location. Extensive expansion of more facilities occurring in Vietnam and other parts of Asia. Willingness to spend money is evident to support customer requirements that make sense.

    Cons

This company has had product stolen by armed robbers twice, the most recent time was spring 2011 by a dozen or so people! Security was weak and the robbers took advantage of that.
Stunning lack of leadership and business strategy by the owners of the company has cultivated a culture of independent workers. There are missing leadership positions, especially in engineering, and thus communication to employees is weak. Product development roadmap plans are not unified with input from the team. Individual contributors make input and it is not discussed amongst the team. No participation in trade shows does not help promote the company in the industry. The company revenue is mostly as a CM build partner vs. shipment of their own products.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire and pay for strong leadership in key roles to define the company product strategies and then staff properly. Delegate some aspects of leadership to VP and Director level management so they will provide working level leadership and product development plans. Have clear direction on what the objectives and direction of the company are.

    Pros

Get to work with some interesting specialized products, CEO has great strategic business partners and connections. There are some employees in the company that are very knowledgeable and valuable.

    Cons

Some bad apples in the bunch. Morale isn't very high overall. Some products on the roadmap don't make sense, and there is no one to lead the direction of the roadmap products. A lot of time and money is wasted due vacancies in engineering leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good leadership and morale are vital for the well being of the company. Team building and technical training are beneficial in the long run, no matter how busy the company is as a whole.
