    Pros

Great place for learning and development; Proven frameworks in the marketing function that will benefit you as a Brand person at any company; Great brands; A competitive environment in that the company wants to win in the categories it is playing in - an exciting time to be at this company; a lot of room for development and diversity in experience; Work/life balance depends on how big of a priority your category is and your manager

    Cons

Big company with a lot of networks and it can sometimes be difficult to navigate; Another general con of a big company is that it can sometimes be a longer time to wait for a promotion

    Pros

If you have Unilever on your resume, it opens up lots of doors the rest of your career. World class marketing company that chapters are written on in b-school textbooks. Recruiters are always knocking on your door. When people were nervous about an announced upcoming reorg, many were able to find new jobs elsewhere within a month before any formal decisions were made. A few years at Unilever makes you a very desirable candidate.

Good work environment- lots of friendly and incredibly smart people, cool company events and perks from time to time, and satisfaction of working for a company that generally tries to lead and do the right thing in terms of sustainability and ethical decision making. There aren't Google-level free perks, but the company generally does pretty well for everybody.

Work life balance is generally outstanding, and makes for a very comfortable work experience for most.

    Cons

Massive bureaucracy of a global company, can be difficult to get to the bottom of things. The first time you have an IT issue, you'll learn this quickly as you languish for days, weeks as you get passed off from contact to contact around the world. You'll be expected to hit the ground running in many roles with little onboarding, so be prepared.

If you have high ambitions, there is only so far you can go in the US since HQ is in Europe. There are international opportunities, but they generally don't go to US managers. As a result, US can get very top-heavy with management, which results in periodic reorgs every so often.

Former Employee - Supply Chain Co-Op in Englewood Cliffs, NJ

I worked at Unilever as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

great co-op experience, gain a lot of knowledge of the supply chain field

    Cons

They don't make offers for full time after a co-op/internship. You still have to interview and go through the whole process that anyone else would, which seems unnecessary after they've seen how you work and taken the time to train you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't lie about your hiring policy when recruiting for interns/co-ops. You make it seem like it is likely that you will get a full time offer, which is completely false.

    Pros

It's a good place to grind your teeth when you start out in brand management. Great resources, talented people, lots of education and networking opportunities, ability to gain experience in various categories and brands, all while learning 'classical marketing' which sets you up well to move onto most companies.....as long as they respect classical marketing, and many do not.

    Cons

The company goes through changes quite often. The culture changes, strategies change, everything. The intent is clearly change for the better, but this isn't always the case. Each new leader brings their own agenda, and often their own buddies, displacing people who are well respected long-timers, and tossing them out. There's been a tendency to flatten the pyramid....more and more at the lower levels, and fewer positions as you try to move up. From assistant to associate to manager isn't too difficult. It's trying to move up to sr. mgr. or worse yet, director where things seem to grind to a halt. Too few positions, too much politics. Politics exist in any organization, some worse than others. Overall its collaborative here depending on which group / category you work with, but it often doesnt feel like a meritocracy. The goal posts seem to move. Despite your best efforts and accolades/kudos, you can get a horrible rating or bonus based on factors that were out of your control. The attrition rate in marketing the past couple years is quite telling. Also, more Europeans and South Americans seem to be brought in especially at director level. The common sentiment is that this is because the pay rate for expats is much lower. The downside is a feeling of frustration among the Americans waiting to move up, and also given that these folks know there rotation is limited in time, there tends to be much less focus on building strategies and long term viability for a brand, and more on doing whatever it takes to deliver this years numbers, since they wont be living with the long-term repercussions of a lack of strategy/vision.

I have been working at Unilever full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are very talented and offer lots of opportunities to learn.
    Powerhouse brands.
    Strong global footprint.
Food and Personal Care blend offers a rare opportunity to get wide experiences in one company.
    Dedicated to making a difference.
    Strong foundational training.

    Cons

Given the size of the organization, there inevitably is a lot of levels, bureaucracy, etc.
On the brand side, sizable and frequent budget shifts make it difficult to plan ahead and cause a lot of strain in the system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For the most part, very driven, smart, and caring leadership. Ego occasionally gets in the way, but my experiences with senior management were quite favorable.

I worked at Unilever full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Fantastic (structured) marketing training program
Processes in place that help you get your job done
Support structure of cross functional partners
High level of talent (think top 90th percentile)
Decisions are made at lower levels (empowerment is something they take seriously)
Global exposure and opportunities (for the select few)

    Cons

Big company which make it work (not impossible) to get visibility
Long development timelines - so it is unusual and difficult to move fast
Consistent pressure for bottom line delivery
If you aren't on one of the high priority businesses your ability to spend is limited
A lot of senior level positions get filled by transplants from other Unilever operating companies making it feel like progression is impossible

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cross people at mid to senior levels across divisions - do not create silos within your own structure
There is value to local talent - despite the move to a global economy and global marketing there is certain ground level understanding that is necessary to succeed

    Pros

Competitive salary, great benefits, vacation, Personal days, holidays, great peers, nice working environment web- seminars, good work/life balance, discount product and working with amazing products be innovated and so far great leadership.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the company has suffered turn over recently years. However great people has been hired and compensated for the loss. Unilever would like to address the issue but sometimes is not that easy( time after time). As a large organization is easy to get lost... Unilever is a trustworthy company who respects their employees and cares their well being.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nothing is perfect!!!. Every large organization has weakness and strengths. Reinforce the strength and address the weakness.
