Fantastic training ground, amazingly talented people around you

Senior Brand Manager (Former Employee) Englewood Cliffs, NJ

    ProsFantastic (structured) marketing training program
Processes in place that help you get your job done
Support structure of cross functional partners
High level of talent (think top 90th percentile)
Decisions are made at lower levels (empowerment is something they take seriously)
Global exposure and opportunities (for the select few)

ConsBig company which make it work (not impossible) to get visibility
Long development timelines - so it is unusual and difficult to move fast
Consistent pressure for bottom line delivery
If you aren't on one of the high priority businesses your ability to spend is limited
A lot of senior level positions get filled by transplants from other Unilever operating companies making it feel like progression is impossible

Advice to Senior ManagementCross people at mid to senior levels across divisions - do not create silos within your own structure
There is value to local talent - despite the move to a global economy and global marketing there is certain ground level understanding that is necessary to succeed

U will love working here; I'm Love it!!

Senior CHEMIST (Current Employee) Englewood Cliffs, NJ

ProsCompetitive salary, great benefits, vacation, Personal days, holidays, great peers, nice working environment web- seminars, good work/life balance, discount product and working with amazing products be innovated and so far great leadership.

ConsUnfortunately, the company has suffered turn over recently years. However great people has been hired and compensated for the loss. Unilever would like to address the issue but sometimes is not that easy( time after time). As a large organization is easy to get lost... Unilever is a trustworthy company who respects their employees and cares their well being.

Advice to Senior ManagementNothing is perfect!!!. Every large organization has weakness and strengths. Reinforce the strength and address the weakness.

    Look beyond the surface

Brand Manager (Former Employee) Englewood Cliffs, NJ

ProsGlobal company with strong personal and food brands, brand building focus, brand management training, company attempts to deliver work-life balance and sustainability

Conspromotion beyond Director-level difficult, can get highly political, employee morale is generally low, location/commuting from NYC, zero HR assistance, challenge to move from Foods division to Personal Care division

Advice to Senior Managementfocus less on politics and focus more on employee development/retention

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend

Great People and are passionate about making a difference

Category Management Manager (Former Employee) Englewood Cliffs, NJ

ProsWell compensated with opportunities for advancement. People are interested in hearding what you have to say and value opinions. The people in headquarters and the field are amazing and are passionate about their work.

ConsThe direction changes too often and it isn't a very nimle organization. Relationship management is critical for movement.

Advice to Senior ManagementCulture needs help after all the restructures.

    Awesome experience, YMMV

Supply Chain Co-Op (Former Employee) Englewood Cliffs, NJ

ProsWorked with a great team, manager's style fit me perfoectly. Flexible work environment was a perk when dealing with NJ weather.

ConsEverything is done remotely via calls and screen sharing - even if the other person is in the same building! Not every intern had such a great experience; my roommate had the exact opposite experience due to an inexperienced manager.

A very rewarding, challenging and dynamic career experience.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Englewood Cliffs, NJ

ProsOverall, a great work experience. Great compensation and benefits. Motivated group of professionals in every function. Unilever has the highest values, ethics and a deeply embedded approach to global sustainable development concerns.

ConsConstant reorganization is a significant drain on productivity and adversely impacts moral.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease, please, please put an end to the constant reorganization. Put the organization in-place and let the business get some traction.

Great marketing training but no senior marketing career advancement

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Englewood Cliffs, NJ

ProsGreat Brands, great training and a high tolerance for risk taking when creating marketing and activation campaigns. Has become a very flat organization and therefore will allow for some independence in decision making for Associate Brand Managers, Brand Managers and Senior Brand Managers.

ConsWhile providing great marketing training at the junior levels, it is very, very hard to get promoted to a Marketing Director - you can be very talented and spend years at the Senior Brand Manager level. Most people end up leaving for Director jobs at other companies. There is no work life balance as although the company recognizes this is an issue, the senior leaders are not really changing their behavior to address it.

Politics play a huge role in your experience

Procurement Analyst (Current Employee) Englewood Cliffs, NJ

ProsExcellent pay, flexible work arrangements, company store, on-site gym, credit union, tuition reimbursement.

ConsRevolving door for non-management. Analysts seem to work for a year or less and jump ship either to other groups, or other companies. Nobody seems interested in staying in one place longer than a year. This creates gaps in knowledge as well as coverage as Unilever HR takes months to replace someone.

Rating system is flawed. End of year rating is a popularity contest, and your bonus/raise can be significantly impacted by this. Managers fight for their own employees by putting down all others, so you may get no bonus because you neglected to hold the door for a manager one day.

Internal advancement opportunity is non-existent. When someone leaves, management fills the position in their heads with internal people before the role is even posted. Interviews take place as a formality, but the candidate has already been vetted and decided on. It makes applying for promotions impossible.

Work-life balance is a joke, and the ones to blame are analyst level employees. Many people spend 12 hours at the office, often taking a two hour lunch, or going to the gym for an hour. The flexibility is nice, but these people purposely do this so at 5:00pm when managers and directors are leaving, they see Susie Q hard at work, dedicated as ever.

Upper management has cloudy vision when it comes to reality. A project was just completed in one of the buildings where all cubes were to be cut in half in height, many people moved around, until it was stopped because the project went over budget, at $300,000. And only HALF of the project was completed... So half of the people on our floor had their cube chopped in half, and half of the floor were left alone... This was said to be done as a morale booster. The disconnect in upper management's ability to view reality is stunning.

Perception is major. There are too many people who talk the talk, but can't walk the walk. People are rewarded and thought highly of based on their ability to glad-hand and hold conversations with upper management, yet when it comes to work, fall very short.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop the bleeding. Keep employees in their roles for longer than a year. Perform performance evaluations based on skills, not just perceptions. Stop pouring money into things that don't matter.

Great Place as long as you're a Self-Starter

Procurement Coordinator (Current Employee) Englewood Cliffs, NJ

ProsThis company offers great mobility laterally and upward if you do the leg-work.
I love the casual environment and the friendly people that work here.

ConsNo one really holds your hand here, but If you know you want to succeed and will pay your dues to get it, you can achieve a lot here.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide more visibility for internal job opportunities.
