Trumbull, CT

Former Employee – worked at Unilever PLC as an intern for less than a year

ProsThe work atmosphere in the Trumbull, CT office was family oriented. People were always very friendly to one another and teams felt like families. As an intern, I was highly respected among all my coworkers. There is a lot of room to grow in the company too with the companies rotational program.

ConsI was not a fan of the location in Trumbull, CT but that is personal preference.

Englewood Cliffs, NJ

Former Employee – worked at Unilever PLC full-time for more than 7 years

ProsExcellent brand portfolio, extremely competitive internationally and really has the foundation for rapid global expansion. Great people. Always looking for ways to improve and innovate. Very flexible work environment - job share and part time options. Good with flex place work as well.

ConsLong hours. Roles continue to expand but are not upgraded so people are stretched thin. Very political organization. It can be difficult to gain clear alignment and move forward.

- Looks good on a resume
-They understand that people are career switchers

-Subsidized food from cafeteria
-Shuttle from NYC to work (although it is a little pricey)
-Great 401K

Cons- Pay - base pay and bonus are not competitive
-Jobs keep getting larger - every reorg consolidates two jobs into one without a pay increase
- No opportunity to have direct reports until you become a mananger
-Manager positions constantly being eliminated, limiting upward mobility
- Takes too long to get promoted
-Work experience before business school not counted when looking at upward mobility/promotions.

Current Employee – been working at Unilever PLC

ProsThe growth opportunity at Unilever is great. Career opportunity is based on performance and management is focused on career development.

ConsUnilever can be somewhat beurocratic at times. The best people at Unilever are world class but the support outside of marketing can be spotty.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice to management would be to learn to be more flexible and take calculaed risks. If you punish people for risks, they will stop taking them.
