Working for a large consumer goods company

Senior Brand Manager (Former Employee) San Juan, PR

ProsIt's a good learning place, 2nd largest consumer products company, with many global brands and teams.

ConsBureaucratic, and top heavy. Similar to other large corporations, constant re-organizations and job changes.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore accountability, and greater transparency with re-organizational processes.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Start your marketing career here, learn what you can and LEAVE after 1.5 yrs and work for a good company with better pay

Brand Manager (Former Employee) Toronto, ON (Canada)

Prosthey used spend a ton on training and development. when employees start, they attend a three week course spreadout over the year in new york. It teaches you the fundamentals of marketing and you learn from some very bright people. Unilever has a traditional approach to marketing that gives you a solid foundation for your career. I'd highly recommend someone out of school working here or someone with an interest in marketing with no skills. However, leave after a few years because the balance at work is non existent and you can get way better paying jobs, better career progression elsewhere.

Conspoor worklife balance in marketing, lack of recognition, senior management always a step behind the competition

Advice to Senior Managementlisten to their employees and act on their concerns

    Constant change

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsPay is above most competitors and company store you have the ability to get most Unilver products at half the regular sale price.

ConsMost employees have no sense of urgency. Most managers do what is best to get their bonus not always working in the best interests of the company, often confilcting goals and KPI's.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Used to be a great place to work 20 years ago! (less good now)

IT Manager (Former Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsChallenging and interesting projects; working with and learning from some great people.

ConsAs Unilever has gone increasingly global (from 2005 onwards) the strong emotional connection with employees at the individual level has been lost. It has become a tougher, more selfish world where everyone has to look out for themselves first. And if you work in IT, Unilever is no longer a great place to be, because of successive waves of outsourcing, offshoring, downsizing, etc. IT professionals are no longer as highly valued as before.

Advice to Senior ManagementI guess Unilever is no different to other big global corporations. Paul Polman has made a huge positive difference to the company, providing a new sense of ambition and energy and focus. But at the expense of the fewer individual employees who are left.... having to work ever harder.

    Unilever's biggest enemy is themselves

Supply Chain Director (Former Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsIntelligent people, multicultural teams, team-working ethic, business processes, brand strength, supply chain performance.

    ConsInternal politics
Average calibre, career minded people in senior positions
    Low salaries versus market
Low recognition for long hours especially if travelling
HR values numbers ahead of people

Advice to Senior ManagementZero tolerance to selfish political senior managers

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend

    Ever changing

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsName recognition, global organization, opportunity for growth

ConsContinuously changing, silo mentality, very large organization, complex structure, costly unit/region reporting structure, lacks work/life balance

Advice to Senior ManagementStructure is complex and redundant needs to be simplified in order to reduce costs and improve efficiencies. Example: why is the marketing manager/director for Mexico work out of Argentina?

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
