Working for a large consumer goods company

Senior Brand Manager (Former Employee) San Juan, PR

ProsIt's a good learning place, 2nd largest consumer products company, with many global brands and teams.

ConsBureaucratic, and top heavy. Similar to other large corporations, constant re-organizations and job changes.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore accountability, and greater transparency with re-organizational processes.

    Constant change

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsPay is above most competitors and company store you have the ability to get most Unilver products at half the regular sale price.

ConsMost employees have no sense of urgency. Most managers do what is best to get their bonus not always working in the best interests of the company, often confilcting goals and KPI's.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great place to start a career, great training, lack of upward mobility

Associate Finance Manager (Former Employee) Englewood Cliffs, NJ

    Pros- Great training opportunities
    - Looks good on a resume
-They understand that people are career switchers
-Laid back environment - can work from home, wear jeans everyday
    -Subsidized food from cafeteria
-Shuttle from NYC to work (although it is a little pricey)
    -Great 401K

Cons- Pay - base pay and bonus are not competitive
-Jobs keep getting larger - every reorg consolidates two jobs into one without a pay increase
    - No opportunity to have direct reports until you become a mananger
-Manager positions constantly being eliminated, limiting upward mobility
    - Takes too long to get promoted
-Work experience before business school not counted when looking at upward mobility/promotions.

Advice to Senior ManagementLots of WL1s are jumping ship...do something about promotional opportunities.

Great place to get a 2-4 yr foundation then move on to a better environment/ advancement -- just like any big CPG firm.

    Associate Brand Manager (Current Employee)

ProsTop CPG company; a lot of brands; great training; easy to go into other marketing afterward

ConsBig, get lost in the shuffle. Some roles much more work than others.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote and support the star talent more. Work out better balance of responsibilities. Value an MBA more. Promote where due in terms of work product not just friends with everyone.

Great work atmosphere for interns, Co op is highly recommended!

Category Procurement Analyst Intern (Former Employee) Trumbull, CT

ProsThe work atmosphere in the Trumbull, CT office was family oriented. People were always very friendly to one another and teams felt like families. As an intern, I was highly respected among all my coworkers. There is a lot of room to grow in the company too with the companies rotational program.

ConsI was not a fan of the location in Trumbull, CT but that is personal preference.

    Great Brands

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Englewood Cliffs, NJ

ProsExcellent brand portfolio, extremely competitive internationally and really has the foundation for rapid global expansion. Great people. Always looking for ways to improve and innovate. Very flexible work environment - job share and part time options. Good with flex place work as well.

ConsLong hours. Roles continue to expand but are not upgraded so people are stretched thin. Very political organization. It can be difficult to gain clear alignment and move forward.

    Good Company / Good Opportunity

Associate Brand Manager (Current Employee) Englewood Cliffs, NJ

ProsThe growth opportunity at Unilever is great. Career opportunity is based on performance and management is focused on career development.

ConsUnilever can be somewhat beurocratic at times. The best people at Unilever are world class but the support outside of marketing can be spotty.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice to management would be to learn to be more flexible and take calculaed risks. If you punish people for risks, they will stop taking them.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
