    Pros

Solid community bank looking to treat customers well. Lots of branches so great for customer service positions.

    Cons

Hours started to get to long for customer service. Not enough float tellers to fill needed roles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep taking care of the employees.

    High stress, poor compensation

I worked at Union Bankshares full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Union has a strong training and onboarding program to prepare new employees for working in a bank environment. They offer reasonably strong benefits. Depending on where you work, you may end up with a really wonderful team - there are some truly good people working there. It can be fulfilling work because you often feel like you're making some positive difference in people's lives, no matter how small.

    Cons

The compensation is laughably poor. High performers do not stick around because they are not given any incentive to do so. The bonus program is unachievable unless you are lucky enough to be in one of the busiest branches. Compensation is also uneven, leading to dissatisfaction amongst longtime employees. It is almost unheard of to become a branch manager from inside the company, as they are only interested in hiring managers from other banks who can bring in new business.

There is a profound disconnect between what is expected by upper management and what is actually achievable in a live bank environment. This all too often leads to a lack of concern for and attention to new policies as they are handed down, and inconsistent implementation of existing policies. Management has unrealistic expectations of the productivity of branch employees, leading to overwork and burnout.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensate your employees well. Between salary, stock, and other compensation, the CEO made nearly $1 million in 2013. It's fun that you take everyone to Kings Dominion once a year, but if you paid everyone a higher wage they could buy their own tickets to Kings Dominion, for their entire family, and go more than once!

    Pros

Numerous locations and personalized customer service. Smaller banks can typically provide a relationship building environment.

    Cons

Traditional banking environment not open to change and feedback from employees. Conservative.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open up the lines of communications and honor and value employee feedback. Also, question Senior Management more in decision making.

I have been working at Union Bankshares full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

No sales pressure!!! Great people in some of the branches. Bank has potential.

    Cons

No sales pressure! No help from area manager or market exec! Bad training in branch! No lending training on how to sell to customers! If you don't speak up you will do well! Worst turn over I have ever seen in Shenandoah Valley market. Never fully staffed! Staff that stay are not appreciated! No career development! Area manager gossips with staff!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

MUST change to be successful outside Richmond. Middle managers and up have no idea what makes a branch successful. RESHUFFLE management!

I have been working at Union Bankshares full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good staff in some branches. Good rep in Richmond area. GREAT potential if better managed.

    Cons

Shenandoah Valley Market is run horribly! Area management has no idea how to manage people. Staff in branches are very demotivated. Turn over is unbelievable, one branch has been through 3 whole sets of staff at a branch and the manager is still there!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to staff about area managers! You are wasting a great opportunity if you let the current situation continue. Great products and great set up, but could be doing so much better if you had a better understanding what was going on, in the branches.

    I worked at Union Bankshares

    Pros

They allow for time off for Doctors appointments and other family business. There are great benefits. The pay is fair compared to other banking institutions. If you were out of sick time they would let you leave early for an appointment and then you could make up the time missed the following day.

    Cons

Some employees have worked there for a long time and it is hard to get promoted due to this. It seems that if you have a degree then you are more likely to be promoted. I had over 15 years experience but it did not seem to get me the position that I wanted with this company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To be trustworthy and respect every person as a working and valuable part of the institution.

I have been working at Union Bankshares full-time

    Pros

Great in other areas. Has great potential

    Cons

Managers want to succeed but the area manager is lacking in experience, talent, man management skills, understanding of the sales processes, coaching and motivation. Could be wonderful place to work but no cohesion between team and middle management.

I have been working at Union Bankshares full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Advanced community bank. Technology is great!

    Cons

Running a drawer and managining branch sales at the same time. Aisle time is a little worrisom in the in-store branches too. Great hours for the customers but bad hours for the emloyees who work at in-store branches from 9-7 M-F and 9-2 on weekends. Open non-major holidays: MLK Day, Presiden't Day, etc. (all in-store branches). Expensive benefits package if you have a family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Increase incentive
