Pros
good work/life balance, unlimited sick time, good benefits, flexibility to work from home
Cons
not a great vacation policy, non-long term Unisys employees treated as outsiders, not many merit raises, old timers kept to themselves and were not very friendly or welcoming of new employees, not very good at marketing their transportation products
Advice to Senior Management
get better marketing management to improve the marketing and sales of your transportation products. there is a lack of knowledge of Unisys transportation products in the industry outside of Unisys
Pros
The technology can be interesting and the coworkers can be really interesting. They really know how to build an OS there. Being able to work with a person from 4 different continents is really cool. One of the few places where a machine is constructed from the ground up and as a result you can understand computers at deeper level them most.
Cons
When someone is anointed by management NOTHING will remove that person the messianic status. Even if that person is wrong and abusive. I have witnessed a screaming match that went on for over an hour. The first level managers then attempt to hide these things from directors and above.
Recruit! Very little hiring is being done and when we have a chance at top talent he sliped out the door because it took over a month to get him an offer. Further more some of the best people we have under 40 are going to leave/leaving/left because the atmosphere is very angry, very petty.
Things are very weak when it comes to proper engineering. There isn't much professionalism left. Several key groups hold NO code inspections and when pressed by upper management lie and say they do.
Fund things that will attract market attention. You have a sizable base with the old univac customers but they are being ignored forever.
Most managers say 90% of the current customers is ok. But they keep saying that and soon after a few years 90% of 90% of 90% is not worth it.
Declining sales, dwindling talent pool and weak management all lead me to state the obvious but painful.
Eventually it will have to shut down.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop tolrating screaming matches.
Bring in proper managers this means liquidate everyone between the VP and the first level line managers, eliminate most of the line managers too. They are far too good at hiding the arguments without resolving them.
Pros
Not much to add here except peers are mostly excelent to work with. Director level and above though still has a lot to be desired.
Cons
Some team members were very disruptive to the overall goals of the company. Salaries have been held back for years. Employee recognition does not exist as it is all about the salary. No 401K matching for a long time. No stock purchase plans. Too much buddy back rubbing. Managers do not listen or coach effectively.
Advice to Senior Management
Get rid of people who are disruptive and raise your level integrity
Pros
This company continued to hire even through some of the more difficult economic times. If you worked with this company long enough, it seemed as though they had some work from home opportunities.
Cons
Management was poor. Most managers are not in the same physical location as you, so you never get to meet them face to face. In order to get a straight answer from anyone, you had to "jump through" a ton of hoops. No career advancement what so ever. Favoritism among team mates was very evident.
Advice to Senior Management
Alienating employees, playing favoritism, not offering training on required standards, and horrible communication through the management chain make Unisys a very poor place to work.
Pros
If you were good at your job, the Product Information Group in Roseville was a decent place to work (layoffs have crippled the group now), and apparently other US sites were also good. Pay was decent and time off easy to come by as long as you were on schedule with your work. The immediate managers were easy to get along with and there was good comradery among the fellow workers. Many did not realize how good the company benefits package was.
Cons
Hard times took a heavy toll on all but senior management. Still a rift between Burroughs and Sperry die-hards, which causes resentment on both sides.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop worrying about the stock price, you have bigger problems to address. Stop laying off the workers and get rid of the senior managers who caused the problems.
Pros
This company is very flexible about personal time.
There are different types of projects to get involved.
Smart people in several areas.
Cons
Not a technology leader anymore.
Very involved in offshoring practices.
There is no job security.
Formal procedures often ignore common sense.
Advice to Senior Management
Software development practices include latest buzzwords in the industry but common sense and practical matters are often ignored. This may need some review.
Pros
Unisys possess great talented people throughout the company both in the U.S. and worldwide. Over the years Unisys has produced many wonderful products with great technology, and has captured many large customers in numerous industries and governments around the world.
Cons
Unfortunately rapid downsizing has been occurring and many good people in engineering have been forced out. Despite it's good products, Unisys has suffered over the years from ineffectual upper management and the inability to sell these products and establish significant market share..
Advice to Senior Management
Management should consider increasing investments in technology and products, and ensure that talented employees, its most valuable asset, are not lost.
Pros
Good cooperation and teamwork among team members to accomplish goals.
Cons
Senior management has no clear direction for the company other than to cut costs to the bone.. Top heavy with management, despite massive layoffs over the years.
Advice to Senior Management
Find a money making strategy and stick to it.
Pros
Excellent client relationships; knowledgeable and competent technical support staff; great camraderie amongst technical people and with line management (first and second level managers); global presence therefore global opportunities; flexible work schedules; home office availability.
Cons
Substandard salary increases; continual erosion of company's contribution to employee benefits; poor outlook for company financial picture; senior management indifference to employees' value and past contributions; continued management focus on expense control rather than revenue growth; senior management lack of direction;
Advice to Senior Management
They are too slow to recognize emerging technologies and business trends; They continue to support unprofitable strategies years after the strategies have been disregarded by the marketplace as irrelevant; They place no value on employee loyalty to the company; There are way too many levels of expensive and unproductive middle management
Pros
The global presence is impressive and makes for a positive part of the day. The work ethic of the professional level and hourly is exceptional. There are several areas of the company where the knowledge level on software, hardware, or networks is world class.
Cons
Constant layoffs in the attempt to make quarterly numbers has a significant Csat effect and has wrecked morale internally. The constant reorg ("transitions") has had a downward affect on titles and salaries while increasing workloads. Raises have been postponed for three months. SSL seems to be more of an excuse to reduce headcount rather than eliminating inefficiencies
Advice to Senior Management
stop the layoffs before we scare our customers away
