Pros
Flight benefits (when you can fly)
Working for a Fourtune 500 company
Carrer experience and exposure in a highly visible company
Cons
Way too much politics and deception
Way too much nepotism and slighted favortism
Unfair compensation for work ethic/results
Culture and local economy/company changes for the worse while going through merger that most people in both communities were against
Advice to Senior Management
Instill a sense of true discipline and clean up the junk that is ignored at the lower management levels. Losing good people to politics, bad mgmt, favortism, etc, as well as loyal customers to bad service and practices is a sign that the upper mgmt is not working for the right reasons and how good companies turn into bankrupt, non-existent ones.
Pros
There are great benefits when it comes to flying and for the most part, a lot of good employee's who made the days go by quickly. I enjoyed the time I was there for the most part.
Cons
Upper management (not middle) needs a lot of work. They don't see the big picture and seem to just be interested in those you are willing to stick there noses way high into you know what. There were a lot of good people overlooked that should have been considered for promotions.
Advice to Senior Management
I would say really get to know your people to the upper management people. Don't just come around for someone's retirement party and not even know their name. That was a regular thing -- upper management not knowing anyone's name.
Pros
Great Bennie, face pace work set. Flexibility with schedule. Everything is good about it. No if and buts or maybe.
Cons
Management don't treat you well. You are only considered a number and not a complete worker. They never acknowledge your work.
Advice to Senior Management
The advice i would have would be that they need to acknowledge or work and not show favoritism because it not fair.
Pros
Flight bennies. However, there must be space available on the airplane so you travel off season. Chances of space available on the plane are non existent for typical holidays. BUT getting a first class seat on a long flight is very satisfying.
Cons
United promotes favorites of management. Biased local management hinders any advancement even with a canidates stellar work history.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop advancing your unqualified friends. There are many of us with perfect records and high standards of customer service that may be a threat to your job. Learn how to be professional from your ticket counter and gate agents. A few of you are embarrassing.
Pros
Enjoyed working on acft, decent pay/benefits
Cons
Management- Horribile!
Union- harbors idiots
Shift work
Advice to Senior Management
resign
Pros
Working at United Airlines is challenging, though rewarding. It is also nice to have free standby travel all over the world.
Cons
The airline industry in recent years has always been flirting with insolvency. When fuel prices spike (as they often do), the work load can increase significantly.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep doing what you are doing. United Airlines turned a profit last year and things are looking promising this year.
Pros
If you are looking for very fast paced, challenging work that requires intense focus but with a great payoff ( in terms of seeing your work in action out in the system), come here. We have a lot of fun among very smart people. You will never be bored. It's an exciting industry with so many facets to engage in. We never stop learning.
Cons
If you prefer a safe, steady and calm work environment, no airline is for you. This is not a co or an industry for the risk averse. When times get rough, you can only lean on you performance (which we pay great attention to). It is a high performance environment.
Advice to Senior Management
The siloed decision making still has opportunities to improve.
Pros
Employees are among the best in the industry. The management refuses to harness the employee potential. They insist on being the 'premier' airline of choice while expecting the employees to work with sub-standard pay, work rules and benefits.
Cons
Lowest pay among the major airlines. Employees are still woking with a bankruptcy contract long after the company exited bankruptcy and is now merging with Continental. It is criminal the way management treats the employees at United.
Advice to Senior Management
Management needs to LEAD and not just manage! Part of leading is to inspire and empower those that you lead. You also need to be FAIR with them. This management is either incapable or unwilling to do any of this. Management has taken their huge cut of the pie....long past time to share with those that did the sacrificing through bankruptcy. It is not business....it is basic human decency.
Pros
Good benefits, challenging work, exciting industry, dynamic company, some great people, located in the Loop (vs. Elk Grove Village or Houston)
Cons
Management team post-merger is not yet aligned creating groups working against each other, culture clash continues between United and Continental employees creating a lot of bureaucracy.
Advice to Senior Management
Align on common goals and communicate well with employees - this is not getting done. Continue to value employees and alignment of employee groups. This is a challenge, but United can truly be a great company.
Pros
Benefits were outstanding
great work culture
Cons
pay was not as much as expected, probably due to great benefits
