Pros
Flying benefits prior to merger; Fast-paced dynamic business with many opportunities.
Cons
Too much favoritism among certain individuals and even seniority is considered at the managment level vs. good performance.
Advice to Senior Management
Hire individuals at the Sr. Managment level that can make true sound decisions and control the department behaviors.
Pros
Great work/life balance
Good benefits, including free flights (on standby)
Airline industry is fun
Flight operations are solid
Cons
E-commerce is not a focus of the company
Product management takes orders from other groups, does not drive strategy
United website is built poorly and has low customer satisfaction, and no effort has been made to fix it
Continental site is outdated and will be the platform for the new joint site
Major growing pains merging the two companies
Culture is hierarchical and old-school
Management is unapproachable and does nothing with feedback from staff
Social media barely exists
Merchandising rules the online strategy, user experience is the last priority
Advice to Senior Management
The e-commerce group needs to lead, instead of just taking orders. Also, customer experience needs to be a focus, not just more and more add-ons - consider how merchandising is cannibalizing ticket sales.
Pros
Good flexibility if you are senior. Leisurely life style if you are senior
Cons
restrictive work rules.. cap on earning potential..
Advice to Senior Management
Get Rid of AFA!!!
Pros
Great opportunity for advancement. Great benefits.
Cons
Potential layoffs. Low entry level pay.
Pros
United has a great route structure.
Cons
The airline industry has been very uncertain financially.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat your workers the same as you treat yourself.
Pros
Flight benefits were nice
Tough to fly standy due to full flights
New CEO can change morale by putting Continental management in place
Eliminate cut-throat United Airlines management
Cons
Employees fearful and not respected
Heavy internal politics
Turf wars among management teams. All about control, not results
Enormous egos among management
Top heavy management. More VPs, Managing Directors and Directors than frontline managers.
Inconsistent strategy.
Lack of resources to due job due to layoffs of frontline employees (while management ranks have grown)
Initiate programs for the sake of change/resume-builders
Lack of shared goals across divisions paralyzes efforts
Sweat shop. Long hours, low reward
Worst employee morale of any company in Chicago
Advice to Senior Management
Treat employees with respect. Walk the walk, don't talk the talk. It's as basic as it gets. Happy employees make happy customers (see Southwest Airlines). Jeff CEO can hopefully bring about the positive environment at Continental.
Pros
*Global brand
* Large network
* there are some humane and competent middle managers ( but they are few and far between )
Cons
* very bitter incumbent coworkers. They are angry and management, angry and new hires, angry at customers...just plain angry
* policy and procedure changes on a regular basis...the only thing consistent is inconsistency.
*organization is obsessed with metrics with little concern over human factor impact on customers or employees
*willingness to outsource anything and everything to the lowest bidder with little consideration for quality control and impact on the brand
Advice to Senior Management
The new leadership is bringing some humanity back into the UAL culture. Please empower your front line employees, who have years of airline experience, to make decisions that have positive outcomes for customers and employees and let the metric stats take care of themselves.
Pros
healthcare, wage, pension, and travel benefits, schedule flexibility, the variety and number of coworkers, working outdoors in beautiful Colorado weather
Cons
An ongoing regime of uncommunicative, disinterested, Machiavellian, and apathetic managers - anyone who should know what the future of the Denver hub is either doesn't know or isn't saying. Over 50% of peers in Ramp Service job classification are part time while peers in other hubs with less seniority are full time - this is contactually allowed but we have never been given the courtesy of an explanation for the business reason for this arrangement. Local management refuses to create additional money making opportunities for UAL at Denver hub - limited ground service and de/anti icing for United Express and Star Alliance carriers. A steady march towards line station status.
Advice to Senior Management
Just tell us what the future will be in Denver - give us time to find other jobs instead of stringing us along as you have been for the last three years.
Pros
Good benefits for travelling, good work life balance
Cons
Less opportunities for advancement, career growth
Pros
Some of the best reasons to work for United Airlines are work flexibility, employee development and career opportunities.
Cons
Due to all of the downsizing and restructuring at United Airlines, there has been many adjustments that has impacted many employee groups and their families.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to have forums with each of the departments to get feedback from
frontline employee groups.
