I worked at United Airlines full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Getting overtime when you need it.

    Cons

Took away pension, health & dental benefits, as well as outsourcing my job. Management was awful to deal with and I was lied to constantly. Empty promises is what I like to call it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up!! Don't disrespect your employees and CERTAINLY don't outsource them just to save money. This is why everybody hates United! You shouldn't have to take away everybody's pension and benefits just to save money.

I worked at United Airlines full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are ok. (good 401k , 4 %, dollar to dollar up to 100%)
    Very diverse company.
Lots of applications/systems to work on.
HQ in Willis Tower (if that is a Pro for you)
Travel benefits (if you are very very flexible , since its a stand by)
    Airline industry could be exciting.
I enjoyed working with the people on my projects.

    Cons

Exaggerated flight benefits (after the merger, its just crazy getting a seat on a standby especially with so many people working there for 10 + years, they are always in front of you in the standby line). Also with decreased capacity its very hard to get a seat on standby. During holidays and weekends, forget it.

Pay is way below the market since they show travel benefits as a monetary benefit. Funny thing is they talk about free travel benefits but they give you only 2 weeks vacation. You get 3 weeks after 5 yrs.

Not much room to grow, there are too many directors and sr managers. Less people to do the real job. Too many contractors who has been in the company for many years and have zero interest to perform the job. They think they are indispensable and the management treats them like one.

For a company of that size, they are very disorganized, chaos in the projects they work on. They just cant get anything done without spending too much money. No wonder they rarely beat Delta or other airlines and always last in customer service and on time ratings.

    Merit increases are discretionary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Enough of sweet talks and act like real leaders

I have been working at United Airlines full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

good base salary, earned comp time, great co-workers, international flight benefits, ability to have 2 enrolled friends, flexible schedule, headquarters is in a fantastic city, access to VPs and SVPs, feel like an integral member of my small team.

    Cons

lack of communication, reduced compensation, including merit raises and profit sharing reductions, no room for promotions or career advancement within same work groups, number of flights canceled and delayed is frustrating and embarrassing, upper management does not seem to care about the customers or employees and always uses the weather in UA hubs as the scapegoat for why we are not doing as well as other legacy airlines.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix the on-time and cancellation issue. Start to respect your employees and value your customers.

I have been working at United Airlines

    Pros

Laid back work culture that offsets a fast pace high stakes job.
Great team work ethic in most coworkers.
    Very flexible schedule.
    Fly for FREE!!!

    Cons

Sometimes very negative attitude toward company.
conflicting ways of operating between people who worked for United and Continental PRIOR to the merger.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consult those who actually work for you, as well as the number crunching consultants you pay out the butt, before making operational changes to the job.

I have been working at United Airlines full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Exciting and dynamic environment with unique challenges. Feels good to be a part of an organization that drives so much economic activity all over the world.

    Cons

Executive leadership often seems like good ol' boys club, experience difficulty moving up in company due to this. Too many people how have been with company for a long time that do not care about improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Foster more of an open environment that encourages lower positions to contribute with decisions
