    Pros

    Don't take the job home
    Not mentally taxing
    Good Benefits

    Cons

Middle Management in the Retail area has devolved since I first got here. Trustworthiness, integrity, communication, support and team-orientation have all but disappeared. So much so that good people have been leaving. This will continue, without question at least on the Retail Banking side.

Support and Communication from most other departments has become a joke as well.

I'm not sure if it's because the bank has grown in size or that they just simply don't look for the best people, just for the cheapest they can.

Upper Management thinks the Metro area is like WV

Removed Commission during "recession" never re-installed them.

    Advice to Management

Care about something more than just the share holders. Or just sell the joint and ride off into the sunset already.

    Pros

There are a lot of opportunities to grow and develop professionally if you have the will to do so. The company is also connected with the community in which it services and provides great opportunities to network with a variety of people and businesses. There are also sales incentives and bonuses that you have the opportunity to earn by meeting goals. The company is dedicated to sustaining the dividends it pays out to their shareholders at the end of the fiscal year. Generally the team environment is great and the people you work for/with are very accommodating and engaging. It is a company that wants to see you succeed if you want to.

    Cons

Being that the institution is highly focused on the payouts to their shareholders, the environment is very numbers driven. If you cannot deal with the demands of this type of environment then it most likely will not be a great place for you to work.

    Advice to Management

Due to the spread of areas that the bank covers, having sales goals and product incentives cater more to the areas in which the bank is servicing may help drive sales up further.

    Pros

Great work environment, filled with various subsections of races and ethnicity. A very welcoming environment.A great atmosphere and different within each branch.

    Cons

Upward movement from within the retail banking side maybe difficult, a lot of veterans in the management levels. They do offer a lot of in-house benefits in terms of banking needs.

    Advice to Management

Make accessibility to upper level management positions easier to transition to as a veteran of lower level employment positions.

    Pros

Acessible management, god work/life balance. Compensation

    Cons

Dual management structure madeit difficult to work between WV and VA offices. My manager had very little knowledge of the deartment and was not equipped to manage a group with a growing institution.

    Pros

Please note that this review is for the commercial credit department in Vienna, VA and in no way pertains to the various branches. This review is focused solely on the corporate level of United Bank.

    - Great health insurance at low cost to the employee
    - 40 hour work week (rarely worked additional hours)
    - Laid back environment
    - Treated like adults (no micromanagement)
    - Challenging work
    - Smart, experienced co-workers

I have great respect for this organization. I do recommend working here.

    Cons

    - Compensation is probably a little lower than at competing organizations, although it might be within the margin of error
    - To me this was a very big thing--the corporate culture is rapidly devolving into obvious favoritism. A certain college/university has a lock on new hiring; those new hires get special training and participate in a leadership development program; they get special access to corporate executives; they are promoted faster than others; and there is an unwritten/unspoken understanding that they are being bred to be the organization's future executives. As a result, it became apparent to me that I had a job, not a budding career. Even though I was promoted, ultimately I knew I had no real career future at the organization and decided to leave as a result of the glass ceiling.
    - This isn't a big deal at all, but the office space is the ugliest, least inviting, crappiest space I've ever worked at. It is/was kind of an office joke--not a big deal. In fact, it builds some camaraderie among co-workers.

    Advice to Management

Overall, United Bank is a respectable and well run organization; however, the obvious favoritism based on attendance to a certain college/university will continue to cost you good employees (already cost at least 2 good employees).
