I worked at United Bankshares full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Please note that this review is for the commercial credit department in Vienna, VA and in no way pertains to the various branches. This review is focused solely on the corporate level of United Bank.

    - Great health insurance at low cost to the employee
    - 40 hour work week (rarely worked additional hours)
    - Laid back environment
    - Treated like adults (no micromanagement)
    - Challenging work
    - Smart, experienced co-workers

I have great respect for this organization. I do recommend working here.

    Cons

    - Compensation is probably a little lower than at competing organizations, although it might be within the margin of error
    - To me this was a very big thing--the corporate culture is rapidly devolving into obvious favoritism. A certain college/university has a lock on new hiring; those new hires get special training and participate in a leadership development program; they get special access to corporate executives; they are promoted faster than others; and there is an unwritten/unspoken understanding that they are being bred to be the organization's future executives. As a result, it became apparent to me that I had a job, not a budding career. Even though I was promoted, ultimately I knew I had no real career future at the organization and decided to leave as a result of the glass ceiling.
    - This isn't a big deal at all, but the office space is the ugliest, least inviting, crappiest space I've ever worked at. It is/was kind of an office joke--not a big deal. In fact, it builds some camaraderie among co-workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, United Bank is a respectable and well run organization; however, the obvious favoritism based on attendance to a certain college/university will continue to cost you good employees (already cost at least 2 good employees).

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Fayetteville, WV

    I worked at United Bankshares

    Pros

Lots of room to advance if you're aggressive about it. Easy access to almost any level of employee if you have a problem.

    Cons

Held on to old/cheap ways of doing business. Reluctant to upgrade. Reluctant to equip people well. Cheap was better than good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start spending money on keeping good employees. When you upgrade, upgrade to a system that is actually sufficient. Trust me, it'll keep you from having to upgrade twice.

I have been working at United Bankshares

    Pros

Casual Dress Code - That's about it

    Cons

    Cheap
    Lacking Communication
    Resistance to Change
    Old Technology
    HORRIBLE BENEFITS
    Incompetent Management Staff
    No Feedback on Performance
    Bias Treatment of Employees
    Unpaid Lunch Break
    Not Many Promotional Opportunities
    Deceiving

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being so cheap! If you're going to brag about how well the bank is doing in terms of revenue, then maybe you should ante up for some technology that was made in the new millennium - or at least something newer than GREEN SCREENS from the 80s, and also maybe pay your employees more, or invest in a health insurance plan that actually covers something medical. A better communication of an employees performance is HIGHLY needed - as nobody ever seems to know how they're doing. THERE IS ALSO NO TRAINING GIVEN!

Decent benefits, but poor pay, coworkers, and hours.

    I worked at United Bankshares

    Pros

The work isn't hard. If you are full time the benefits aren't bad. They do try to promote from within.

    Cons

The pay is pretty low. At the branch I was at my coworkers were miserable. If your in an in store branch you have crappy hours. You also have to deal with dumb, smelly, rude customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop being so cheap.
