Pros
Flexible schedule, decent benefits package, smart employees and fairly interesting work
Cons
Hard to say if the same problems exist today as during my tenure, but often senior management was not transparent and tended to be gossipy.
Pros
Early responsibility
OK work/life balance
Lower than industry-average salary for reasonable hours and little travel
Relative freedom to manage own time
Cons
Unclear promotion structure / room for advancement
Not a meritocracy
Decentralized structure so there is a lot of office-to-office variability
Advice to Senior Management
Try to integrate the company and give people a clearer path forward. Reduce operational inefficiencies. Paying people better wouldn't hurt either.
Pros
There are very smart, hardworking people at UBC. They care very much about the science, their clients and the company. UBC is working very hard to make the working environment a balanced and rewarding place.
The organization's new CEO is Robert Epstein - an MD, who is also a very visionary leader excited to make UBC a great place.
Cons
The company is undergoing a lot of changes on every level - from leadership, to benefits, to job design to compensation. We need employees who can be flexible and are willing to help push the organization forward.
Pros
Only positive is some nice coworkers
Cons
Job totally different than what is portrayed in the interviews. Job description, management, and salary changes shortly after started. No upper management support for what is needed to get the job done (despite what they say in the interviews). Upper Management takes credit for the work of others. Direct retaliation when several employees go to HR or managers with feedback of no support from upper management. Company structure set employees up for failure before you even start and will sabotage your career.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your employees, get evidence / proof of work done before give credit to some people especially when consistent complaints were brought up by several people reporting to specific individuals
Pros
Decent paid time off and benefits are ok
Cons
resourcing constraints, internal issues that impact the clients.
Advice to Senior Management
Survey the clients and employees and so who is really happy.
Pros
Opportunity to work on varying projects, different hats every day
Cons
Low pay, long hours, no advancement
Advice to Senior Management
Pay better for the work done and hours required
Pros
Flexible attitudes, varied work. Friendly.
Cons
Salary and benefits could be better
Pros
Flexible hours are the best part.
Cons
Too much work for too little people, ultimately affecting product quality and employee work-life balance.
Pros
-Friendly people
-Good PTO
-Good Benefits
- Casual
- Plans social events in and outside of work
- Laid back
- Room for growth
Cons
-Inconsistency of promotions - Some people never get promoted or hired on, while others seem to move up the ranks and not consistently. The people who are promoted may not be the most deserving, but some how they get promoted while others who work equally, if not much, much more, do not get promoted due to "team need."
-The inconsistency of the positions between teams. To be a specific level on one team does not mean you will be doing to same work or even be held to the same standard as other employees at the same level. If an employee is working at a much high level then their colleague who has a higher position, the lower position colleague should be promoted. OR keep the career levels the same and consistent. A Project Specialist's (Or Assistant or Manager) work ability should be the same as any other PS on a different team.
- How unnecessary most of the cons written on this website are. They can be changed.
Pros
Pros of working for UBC? Decent salary and benefits and a generous bonus every year. Some very nice people to work with.
Cons
UBC does a fine job at taking bright, hardworking employees, burning them out by refusing to hire the extra employees needed to do a job properly, then blaming them when something inevitably goes wrong.
They make the classic mistake of overselling for the amount of staff that is available and trained to successfully create and test the product. They also make commitments to clients for products that staff doesn't have the knowledge and expertise needed to create and maintain.
The others who have written about this company are telling the truth. If you are considering working for this company because you are desperate, keep in mind that once you start at UBC, you won't have any time or energy to find something else once you realize that you are in a living hell.
Advice to Senior Management
Management would do well to think hard on the correlation between stress and corresponding lack of sleep and work performance/quality. They would also do well to get rid of senior management who hold back progress by clinging to outmoded technology. The management style is not sustainable. The only reason that the SF office has not completely fallen apart is that some very good workers are staying on because of the poor economy. Once the economy picks up, those employees will leave for smarter companies and UBC will be left with only inexperienced people who will also leave when they gain enough experience.
