I worked at United Communications Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great perks like free soft drinks and fruit. And a company trip every 5 years. Probably also could be a good place for journalists; I was a marketer.

    Cons

Micromanagement combined with a culture of intimidation and fear.

    Advice to Management

Don't have the journalists manage the marketers.

    Pros

Casual dress code Open leave policy Greatest co-workers EVER Flexible work environment Good community involvement Long tenure of employees- good sign UCG is hands-down the best company I've ever worked for. I actually enjoy going to work every day. It's the people that really make it, though- this is an amazing, wonderful group of individuals and it's like a big family.

    Cons

Some of the positions work later hours (maybe 9:30-6:30 instead of your typical 8-5), but that's really the only "con" if you don't like to work past 5 pm. A lot of the positions are flexible though, so if want to be out by 5 every day, you'd just have to find one of the positions where you can do that.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the fantastic work!

    Pros

very good benefits, good work-life balance, easy to ask for time off, friendly atmosphere, casual dress code, management people very accessible

    Cons

Lack of training opportunities, company consists of independent divisions so depending on where you work, you might be limited in promotion opportunities

    Advice to Management

They should walk through their office more often and talk to employees of all levels, not just people that report to them. They would gain much better understanding of the state of the company and what can/ needs to be improved.

  8. UCG, good company but....

    Pros

Casual work environment. You get free bagles and OJ every Monday morning. Liberal leave policy, which means you take as much vacation time as you want as long as you clear it with your manager. They don't keep track of your sick or personal leave. A fruit cart comes around everyday with free fruit.

    Cons

It really depends on which department who work for if you want to have a good experience at UCG. Some departments are better run than others. The company has slowly been selling off departments over the years, and it appears they have not acquired many in a past few years. Like most publishing companies it is struggling with the economy and competition from the internet. Before 9/11, UCG was a much better place to work. But since 9/11, there have been layoffs, downsizing and cutbacks in various departments. Still, its an easy going place to work as you as you do your job. Not very political or back stabbing like other companies. People willing to help one another. The company's move from Rockville to Gathersburg a few years ago was not popular, and the company is no longer near a metro station. But the new offices are better and you are still near a lot of stores.

    Advice to Management

Bring back the UCG before 9/11 - it was a better company back then.
