Pros
After years of suffering billions of dollars in losses, we are now the #1 company in the MI industry. Growth has been tremendous and there are so many innovative efforts underway. We are truly redefining the industry. Work is non-stop (good and bad) - new growth efforts, new technology efforts. Lots of hiring and some good efforts for advancement if you're near the bottom.
Cons
Cronyism is rampant - there is no meritocracy here. The new senior management team is very capable and has brought the swagger back to UG. Unfortunately, since they took over, there has been almost no promotion from within, as they do not trust the employees who "caused the problem". Most new positions are filled from the outside, mostly from the CEO's contact list.
Advice to Senior Management
Look within before going outside the company. There are a lot of very talented employees who were not "part of the problem" and have a ton to offer.
Pros
Greensboro is a great place to raise a family.
Cons
It is in a dead end industry,
Advice to Senior Management
Be honest and take accountability for your decisions.
Pros
The best reasons to work for UG are the benefits and focus on work/life balance. It's easy to work from home, and managers are very flexible with regards to scheduling personal errands. The pay is pretty good, as are the benefits. Further, at least in an IT capacity, UG is a forward-thinking entity. We use new technologies and write good software, which makes a job as a programmer pretty enjoyable.
Cons
Because most UG employees have stuck around for the long haul, it's very difficult to get more responsibility. A talented young employee will probably not enjoy being told to wait a few years to get interesting work because that's just the way things are done at UG. The domain (mortgage insurance) is kind of boring as well.
Advice to Senior Management
There's been very little feedback to IT&S employees since the start of the AIG crisis. As far as I know, Billy Nutt hasn't been in to work since September. This is troubling because I know people who work in other departments who claim to have gotten weekly updates from senior management about the state of the economy and how it affects UG. That definitely makes IT employees feel unwanted.
