Stock and replenish wholesale merchandise, and work on post orders by breaking down the pallets and printing labels.

    Pros

Stocking merchandise is quite easy. Scanning the labels to prepare for inputting the "pick line" or "back shelf" for that item.

    Cons

Post orders are difficult to work with. Because breaking down the items from the pallet can sometimes require reorganizing the pallet for bulk quantities, and searching for extra U-boats for more minimal quantities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If an employee is good on one task (like stocking), but is bad at another task (like post orders); don't have that employee laid off. Just have an employee continue on a task he/she is good at that task.

    Pros

The people working in this company are supportive of each other, and at the same time they are self-starters. There are multiple options and opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

There is a definite need to be flexible and think on your toes, which if you're not a particularly organized person can be problematic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make it clear what potential career advancement paths are.

    Pros

If you really NEED a job. The money can be fair.

    Cons

I spent 3+ years as a driver at the Lancaster, TX D.C. It's almost unbelievable how a company can grow as large as UNFI with the management they have, especially in Lancaster. I have many years in transport management and felt that I could have made a difference, if nothing more than employee morale. Certainly, 98% of the people on staff in transportation would be gone tomorrow for a lateral exchange. Working environment is very institutionalized. It has an extremely cold feel about it.

    Pros

Employee stock, good benefits, food co-op, and the feeling that you get working for a green company.

    Cons

Cut-throat management, out and out abuse of staff. Textbook hostile work environment, corporate bullying at it's worst. No line between work and home life. Unrealistic and inappropriate infringements on staff's lives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some, not all, of the biggest offenders have been (thankfully) let go or replaced. You need to do two things; review the stack of employees that left in the last few years for the ones that you should call back, and two; get a consulting firm in to turn around the corporate culture. Profitability does not hinge on brutal treatment of staff. You need to admit that there is a problem; make a good act of contrition, and vow to sin no more. If you're not willing to do that they what you have is a people mill that churns staff members like grist. That is not the values you ascribe to on your website. Either start living up to those values or take them down. Call me; I'll help you do it. I tried, and I was driven out.

    Cons

Treated poorly, associates get no appreciation unless you are in upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at United Natural full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Tuition Reimbursement program available to all employees after probationary period. A green company that cares about its environmental impact. Typically open management positions are given to internal candidates after interviewing.

    Cons

Salary for office is sub-par for the market. Benefits have gone down hill over the last several years but still competitive for whats on the market. The company being a warehouse often makes policies based off that part of the business with little to no consideration to office associates. Management and associates workload is often extreme and unmanageable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review policies and salary for the office as a separate entity within your company.. Hire adequate staffing to not bog down the current employees. Remember that as you continue to go corporate to not focus just on the share holders but to the people who do the day to day tasks.

I worked at United Natural full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    I met some nice people.

    Cons

I worked at the corporate level for two years and it was like being in prison. They ruled by a culture of fear. I wish I would have known ahead of time what working there was really like and regret ever leaving a great company to work here. Long hours, stress, weekends and extreme micromanaging are all part of the perks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your staff as team members, not replaceable parts. There truly is something called work-life balance and life is more important. Yes, work hard but not at the expense of families and health.
