    Fast-paced environment but worth it.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsSmall positions build a great résumé, great benefits, and gets you and inside look to all the issues without bias from the media.

ConsMust be ready to work long hours during campaign seasons and when congress is in session. Your plate is never too full.

It was boring and didn't give me any growth potential.

    Legislative Assistant (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsIt was sometimes interesting when congress would work on an issue that was interesting. The problem was that that hardly ever happened.

ConsThere were many components of the job that were frustrating and boring and didn't help me with career growth in any way.

Advice to Senior ManagementUnplug the phones! There are way too many crazy people who harass congressional staff all day long. There obsess over issues that they do not understand.

A hectic whirlwind of paperwork, image manufacturing, and late nights with lots of coffee.

    Intern (Former Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsGot a good feel for why the government, and more particularly Congress, is so disliked on the national scale of government branches by the public. An obese bureaucracy riddled with a cancerous amount of lobbying money that essentially eliminates any ounce of the concept of "one person, one vote."

    ConsSee the Pro above ^.

Advice to Senior ManagementShrink Congress drastically.

After working with the House of Representatives I gained valuable insight to the inter-workings of Congress.

    Staff Assistant (Former Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsWorking environment and culture is outstanding. Congressional members treat everyone with respect and dignity (assuming you are doing good work).

ConsWorkloads and working hours can be demanding. If they need you, you must work. It is as simple as that.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue treating your employees with respect. It will show with the work product those employees produce.

    Typical back-bench GOP Congressman

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsDr. Bucshon is smart, likable, and well intentioned. He is motivated by the right things for his district (and his reelection) and is liked by his colleagues and staff.

ConsDr. Bucshon is a poor fundraiser which makes him a constant target for primary and election opposition. He is also satisfied to be the wall-flower in most serious policy actions. His office staff are poorly managed and inexperienced.

Summer Intern for the United States Congressman located in Austin, Texas.

    Intern (Former Employee)
    Austin, TX

ProsInside look of how Congress works and operates. Gives you the chance to research important legislation regarding our country. Ability to talk with constituents of the Congressman's district.

ConsNever even got to meet the congressman as an Intern. Summer Intern position doesn't require much more than answering phone calls and being the assistant secretary's secretary.

Intern @ Congressman Hank Johnson's Office

    Intern (Former Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsFreedom to research what we wanted, to go the hearings & briefings we wanted, and weren't responsible for too many of the stereotypical "intern" responsibilities

ConsNot always much for interns to do, some staffers were difficult to communicate with at times, a lot of ambiguity in assignments and sometimes hard to come up with work to do.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave a realistic intern guidebook as to what to expect, give them more responsibility - they are able to help more than you expect.
