Good experience, low pay.

ProsYou can't get experience like this anywhere else. You get to be a part of the legislative process and see how many other industries work.

ConsLow pay, loads of responsibility, and very intense work environment.

I interned for a Representative for one semester.

Intern (Former Employee)
Washington, DC

I worked at United States House of Representatives as an intern for less than a year

ProsThe experience of working on the Hill is worth it. There are uncountable opportunities to network, and you get a great view of the legislative process. Plus, you get real insight into what most Congressional offices are actually focused on: pleasing and supporting constituents.

ConsMost work is fairly administrative. You work long hours. Intern's don't get paid, and most people in member offices get paid very little.

I found it a great place to learn and work while I am in college, gave me a new perspective on the legislative process.

Communications & Media (Former Employee)
Washington, DC

I worked at United States House of Representatives as an intern for less than a year

ProsGreat networking opportunities, learn a lot about the legislative process, job stability, very friendly staff, fast-paced environment, good hours, overall a decent place to work.

ConsNot much specialization for interns outside of secretarial work (answering phones, filing, relaying messages), dealing with constituents can be trying.
