I worked at United Technologies full-time

    Pros

Large company with lots of resources. Ability to move around to different departments. Global company.

    Cons

Not many options to work abroad. If you work in Finance, you have no say over your career path. They move employees around every three years into departments that they choose for them. Male dominated workforce. Old school mentality, especially in the manufacturing sites. Benefits are terrible. Only high deductible medical plans offered. If you are having a baby or require a lot of medical care, be prepared to pay a lot out of pocket before the deductible kicks in.

    Advice to Management

Let your employees be empowered to decide their own career paths. Pay better. Offer better benefits.

I worked at United Technologies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits were great. A lot of gifted and fun employees. They also had some of the best managers to work with.

    Cons

United Technologies bought out Carrier Corporation, but allowed Carrier to continue working under its original name. United Technology then began sending jobs from Carrier Corp. over seas. Carrier Corporate actually lost one of our best Presidents in one of its largest International departments because "his people liked him too much". I reported to him directly. When he left he took most of his best managers and finance people with him and got them jobs at as CEO of the Company he went to.

    Advice to Management

You have destroyed one of the best businesses in America that supported thousands in the Upstate New York area. Stop sending these jobs over seas. Realize that when you have a great President that works with his people that they believe in him and work harder. Not the other way around.

I have been working at United Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Employee scholar program is the best thing about this company.

    Cons

Utc doesn't pay employees what they're worth, even after obtaining degrees and special certifications to perform job functions. Work is expected to be put ahead of family. Overtime is constantly pushed. End of the month rush to get product out the door is a monthly occurrence. Health benefits are horrible with high deductibles. Too many managers and supervisors. Not enough people on the floor working with product.

    Advice to Management

People have lives outside of work. Fight harder to keep good people by offering them better pay. Quit rushing and mistakes will happen less.

I have been working at United Technologies full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It used to be a great company. Goodrich. The benfits for schooling are good, but for how much longer? The atmosphere is pretty good most of the time.

    Cons

They are looking at every single benefit and will cut them at all costs. Goodrich used to have ESPP, little gifts for birthdays, safety, 4 weeks vacation at 10 years, bonuses, etc. This has all been gutted. 4 weeks at 15 years, espp gone, bonuses most likely gone, gifts gone, etc. the health insurance was manageable, now its junk with the high deductible plan. The company is trying to fit a blanket one size fits all to everything. all of the ACE structure and standard work, and the new product introduction stuff is very lengthy and convoluted. Its less about engineering work and more about paperwork, charting, bottomline thinking. It claims to be innovative, but its tough to fit in innovation with all the stuff going on. The company doesn't focus at all, its a mess of everything in your face. Constently doing safety improvements all the time, job hazard analysis, ergo stuff, normal work, supervisor/manager stuff, hiring freezes, cutting costs, etc. This is expected to be carried out by the areas supervisors. Some of the decisions made by management turn out to be huge costly mistakes, because UTC views managers as managers. not as technical leaders in the company so they hire those with little experience in the field. They have a hierarchy, managers sit in rooms with windows, those who aren't managers don't. They definitely have a the haves and have nots between the L3 and everything below L4 paygrades. They obviously value education lots but seem not to apply it or retain those that are bright. I really want to like this company, I like some of the people still working here (mind you MANY have left) but its difficult to work for a company where you don't want to move up due to work life balance, marginal pay differences, and stress. It's a very confused company who wants black and white and implements all shades of grey. They value diversity and force rigid standard work on you. They look at metrics and implement plans without understanding the problems. They assign these solutions but the enforcer can't effectively implement without knowing the problems. All I see is one big confusion, it's like upper management has no idea what businesses they own or just purchased.

    Advice to Management

The things you are doing haven't worked in other companies. those that have been successful, atleast stock market wise, have promoted from with in, home grown individuals with deep understandings of the products. They get the right people in the right places, and get rid of the dead weight. They create a vision and align everyone and the resources to work to the vision. Try training some people as well on the tools that are used at the company. MRP systems and such. Find more leaders, less managers. Get rid of the bottom line thinking, results will come, customers first.

I have been working at United Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay and great educational compensation.

    Cons

ACE program doesn't allow for self thinking and too many clicks which if you're not in advancement will not happen. They hire too many people based on education only don't really care about experience.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be a big revamping of mangers and ratio of mangers to workers the company is way too top heavy.

I worked at United Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits and some good employees but at the time I was employed there was a lot of change occurring.

    Cons

They constantly restructure their organization in an attempt to cut costs. There were a lot of leadership changes happening constantly so uncertainty ruled.

    Advice to Management

Let the business stabilize. Internal communication needs significant improvement.
