Pros
work at home options. ...... . /// / .... .. flexible working conditions, tele commuter role, life work balancing opportunities, health benefits, work in various states
Cons
less pay increase during annual reviews, high wage differentials even for the same jobs. less open policies about pay structures and levels.
Advice to Senior Management
pay for performance. retain talent., reduce hierachial nature of various business units, company seems to be grwoing to big for effective management.
Pros
The pay seems to be commensurate with the industry.
In the hay day, bonues, profit sharing, and stock options were exceptional.
Being a part of a fortune 50 corporation provides a lot of economies of scale that allow the corporation to give its employees discounts through other retailers (like auto companies and apple)
The name looks good on resume
Cons
There are 75000 employees spread across 50 states.
The coporation is based in MN, so it is MN centric. If you are working outside of MN you are out of the loop. If you were an acquisition and not part of the original UHC proper, you are looked down upon and treated like a red-headed step child.
There is NO advancement. You either have to apply for a higher grade job in another department or leave the company entirely (lose seniority and time off) and return for any advancement.
The company does not value loyal, knowledgable and experienced employees. Employees are not a part of any solutions. It is a top down, dictatorship management style. Changes are made on the fly. The changes are poorly delivered if even properly communicated. Usually, via email. No one is brought in at the beginning of the talks, so the decisions are not well thought out or vetted which results in terrible execution, duplication of work and great inefficiencies.
The economy has required the company to "downsize" employees and make the rest do more with less. Even though Health care reform has increased the workload by leaps and bounds. There have been little or no raises, and none in the forseeable future as payroll comes out of the 20% of the medical loss ratio calculation that the feds have place on health insurance companies.
Advice to Senior Management
Take input from the front lines. Include them upfront. Make all employees part of the solution. Get rid of the managers that are not pulling their weight, even at executive management level. Don't just pay lipservice to the annual surveys of employee satisfaction.
Pros
They re a very profitable organization that has posted good numbers over the years. The stock plan has worked very well.
Cons
Management is disconnected with the workers due to perpetual reorganizations. In a three year period I had 10 different supervisors.
Pros
Good Salary and laptops are provided to all employees. MNC culture and health insurance domain knowledge is provided to carry work.
Cons
Management do not respect employees and treat them like slaves. Career opportunities are stagnant and your growth is controlled by managers entrirely.
Advice to Senior Management
Please respect employees and create a culture of respect and have a streamlined vision for growth and progress of company.
Pros
Great management, smart people to work with, fun. Good compensation and strong professional development. If you want to stretch yourself and learn this is definitely the place to do it..
Cons
Heavily MN centric...challenging at times if you work anywhere else. If you want to move up the corporate ladder, you have a better chance if you are located in MN.
Pros
Just a fortune 500 company, looks good on your resume. Generous with their time off, flex work schedules and the whole dept can be off during holidays
Cons
Worst health benefits a health insurance company can ever think of giving to its employees, senior mgt have no respect for junior employees
Advice to Senior Management
Please treat your juniors with respect and give everyone a chance to excel in the company not only the people who kiss .....
Pros
UHG is a large company, and I have heard that other lines of business are better-managed, so my experience may not have been average. That said, I have yet to see UHG on any "Top 100 Places to Work" or similar lists. The fact that it's a large company means that if you like the company, perhaps you can move to a more desirable line of business if the one you start in is not a good fit.
Cons
I will start with the fact that my supervisor did not want to give me the day off so I could attend my dad's memorial service. Another person on my team, who did not do the same job I did, already had a scheduled PTO day, and my manager was unwilling to bend her own rule regarding how many people could be off work on a given day. Never mind that my dad's death couldn't be scheduled - she was just unwilling to see this as a special situation. For me, it was downhill from there. I'd been there for 11 months at that point, and did not have frequent unplanned PTO days. I was a good employee, and this case really soured me on this company. It took the approval of the Senior VP of Human Capital for me to get this PTO request approved, so I could spend time with my extended family as we said out final good-byes to my father. This was a unique situation, and one that most employees are unlikely to encounter.
The above situation likely came about because we were severely under-staffed; we simply did not have sufficient staff to consistently complete our work accurately, on-time, and to the satisfaction of our clients, who are UHG employees. The stress was incredible. There was little to no support in taking measures to be proactive; we saw the same problems constantly, pay period after pay period (i.e., every two weeks), and NOTHING was done to try to train employees how to avoid making the mistakes that were resulting in incorrect paychecks. I raised this issue via an "official" channel and was promptly terminated.
Advice to Senior Management
Allow people who want to do quality work to do just that. Support proactiveness. Sufficiently staff your departments so that your employees aren't driven to unhealthy lengths to cope with job stress. Don't just say you're a healthcare company, actually CARE about people's physical and mental health - and that means your insureds' as well as your employees'. Making shareholders happy is necessary and important, of course, but it's not the ONLY important thing.
Pros
Strong, large, solid company. Competitive salary and some room for advancement. Direct management generally fair. Good corporate structure. Peers were great to work with.
Cons
HR support is lacking when you have issues. Lack of budget when trying to reward employees.
Advice to Senior Management
More empathy and support towards those who go through personal problems in their life.
Pros
Benefits
Direct Deposit from day 1
Early Paycheck view
Biometric Screening
PTO
Updated Equipment and System
Cons
Unfriendly Environment
Clique-Oriented
Full of Yes Men and Women
Tuition Reimbursement ONLY FOR CURRENT POSITION
Advice to Senior Management
Remember that you were once new, as well. And don't be threatened when people don't act as stereotypically as you thought.
Pros
job stablilty, large corporation, good employees
Cons
too many rules and procedures.
