I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The company has a good executive team, but the middle management is too focused on their own agenda. Collaboration across departments could be better, and given the company has a war chest of cash they could do considerably more on internal development and enhancements. Compensation is good, but heavily weighted to pay for performance. Don't expect significant salary increases.

    Cons

Work life balance is the biggest gap with long hours, and being on call expected rather than the exception. There is a good amount of micro management, even at the VP levels.

I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Full benefits package, great exposure to the industry.

    Cons

A low-end job that majors focuses on all the wrong things. Thoughtless metrics system chokes out talented people who might actually care about doing good business.
Employees are treated like children and thus, often behave as such.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More actively work with other management peers to apply pressure on middle management for better metrics and a more professional employee atmosphere. Hire better quality, higher-paid employees to reduce turnover and quality of staff.

    Pros

It is an ok job. Friendly employees and good with telecommunication.

    Cons

Most of the managers don't know jack about the job they've been assigned to supervised. Micro-managing is their cup of tea. Health insurance company with bad health coverage for employees. They can do better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make your employees happy with good benefits to help them stay and please stop sending jobs to offshore.

    Pros

This organization provided an opportunity to interact with talented individuals from around the globe. The PTO and option to telecommute made for excellent work / life balance.

    Cons

Poor local management can make it difficult to function as a team. Overall matrixed structure allowed for a shirking of responsibility among some employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide a way for bad local management issues to be addressed in a timely, serious manner.

Large company with a lot of opportunities to choose from all over!

    Cons

Mergers and constant change keep employees on edge... management changes over too often and people don't always feel that work and life balance is optimal

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a clear strategy, implement it and move forward... worry less about short term, keep reinforcing the strategy and remind line employees that they matter!
