I have been working at Universal Electronics (CA) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people and atmosphere at Universal Electronics are great. The team is small and the work is fast paced, and there are interesting technologies to work on.

    Cons

Upper management (VP+) spends a lot of time micro-managing at low levels (individual contributor level) which can lead to frustration on the part of the team. The pay is below industry averages, and even salaried employees have to punch a time card every day.

    Advice to Management

Lose the time tracking for salaried employees and bring the pay level up to par with other companies.

    Pros

I was able to understand and learn how an international diverse organization used IPSec, a mix of Open Source and proprietary software and modern firewall technologies managed to create and maintain a very cost effective intercontinental network.

    Cons

There was a rather difficult international political situation between the European and the US IT departments. This was caused by a lack of overall IT direction, the existence of a few ivory towers and several corporate acquisitions. Just before I left this issue was being addressed by fresh IT management.

    Advice to Management

    Integratie en samenwerking!

    Integration and cooperation!

Office is still new and clean. Management is horrible. Maybe different in other locations.

I worked at Universal Electronics (CA) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

New office so desks and chairs are still clean.

    Cons

    1. No means of work/life balance A) HQ development team not understanding timezone differences. sometimes people calling at 1 or 2AM. B) Management asking to have a meeting at 2AM / 3AM in the morning & not attending to it. C) too dependent on one person. Once involved in 8 deals all running in parallel. D) even after resignation, constantly calling for help. Management not thinking this is a shame Once or twice, is understandable but almost everyday is not understandable. Side effect of counting too much on one person, but have no plans of increasing because of laws. 2. Corporate culture A) scream more to get more (complain a lot for a raise) B) too many resignations (due to lack of management and harassment) C) not a manufacturer, but a solutions provider. no or little knowledge of manufacturing. D) Constantly preaching value (consulting), but in the end follow customer needs. 3. Threatens to fire for arrogation of authority but Sales controlling the Application engineers. Does not realize that is also considered an arrogation of authority.

    Advice to Management

    1. Do not hire people with their background experience, but with their potential to dedicate themselves in an environment where a person is constantly screaming. 2. Strongly recommend to show candidates reality instead of ideal image. Nobody is interested in your utopia 3. Lead and show value before ordering others to show value. Should prepare an ideal role model up front. 4. Highly recommend to stop making up selfish reasons to why people resigned.

    Pros

The company has excellent potential and has cornered the market in their niche. There are some very good people here.

    Cons

Management is so focused on not spending money on I.T. that the state of the I.T. infrastructure is very sad. Bring a good supply duct tape and bailing wire.

    Advice to Management

Stop replacing I.T. Director's every year. Maybe you should look at the root cause here ...

Strong financials Dedicated employees Good benefits Bonus structure with regular payouts

    Cons

Not very willing to change Inflexible management Draconian financial monitoring Micromanagement at some Sr levels

    Advice to Management

Work to make the environment more open and be willing to take more risk for future reward.

    Pros

There was potential to grow with the company. Managers was the most helpful to me. Talked to customers on the phone daily.

    Cons

The shift was horrible, and it was going to take a long time to get moved off of it.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I worked at Universal Electronics (CA) part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Same schedule each week, coworkers are nice and big pay increase for full time.

    Cons

Supervisors will not hesitate to fire employees who do not meet their quota or even just because they can. Breaks are bad as in a 5 hr part time shift they only give you one 10 minute break. Management will also write you up for whatever they decide to enforce that week. Many good employees were let go becauae of this

    Advice to Management

Dont fire your full time agents and hire part timers because it is cheaper

    Pros

Overall the company treats its employees well, with perks, nice accomadations and descent pay.

    Cons

It really depends on who your manager is. If you happen to have a bad one than you will be treated poorly in your dept.

    Advice to Management

Let your subordinates know that they are appreciated by connecting with them. Make sure supervisors/managers are approachable. Train supervisors better, because if you have a supervisor that treats you respectfully then you will have a better team.

I worked at Universal Electronics (CA) full-time

    Pros

Decent salary; will only get a bonus for non-managers if the company is doing well. The hours are actually not bad in the accounting department; some overtime during quarter end and year end but it's expected. People are friendly. Okay perks, some internal events and nice annual Christmas party. The CEO holds a quarterly all-hands meeting.

    Cons

Because it's not a big company, growth opportunities are limited. Vacation sucks; 10 days to start, 15 days after 5th year, and 20 days after 10th year. Senior management = old boys' club.

    Advice to Management

    None.
