    Pros

Great people and good opportunities to move around the country to advance your career. The culture is very strong in working hard and doing what it takes to get the job done.

    Cons

Little to no formal training and career development, your future is entirely in your own hands. The bonus structure was often vague or difficult to fully own based off of you specific performance. If the company is doing well you will do well, if the company is struggling, you are struggling.

I have been working at Universal Forest Products full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits
    Friendly Coworkers
    Interesting design work

    Cons

    Pay is a little low
Impossible to get promoted as a designer; only sales gets promoted

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Designers bring a unique skill to designing manufactured products for commercial and multifamily buildings that are extremely detail-oriented. These workers are valuable to keeping the shops running and profits rolling; you even ask them and shop workers for product ideas because you know of the potential. please treat them as such by giving them some incentive to work. A means of moving up in the company is a start.

I have been working at Universal Forest Products full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The people in this company are great and love to work hard and play hard. It's a very sales oriented company with a lot to offer its employees. Resources are endless. Growth is very realistic unlike other corporations that limit the opportunity for one to grow.

    Cons

Communication could be better between departments.Training could also use some work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve training and improve standards of communication between employees.

I worked at Universal Forest Products full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Well managed company with plenty of opportunity for growth when the building industry is in good shape

    Cons

Incredibly high stress with little tolerance for errors - unfortunately, a standard in the industry. Very susceptible to building industry fluctuations

I have been working at Universal Forest Products full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits (medical/dental/vision); opportunity to move to different plants in different states; my plant management is fair and don't micro-management; company is big on bonus than salary (for salaried-supervisor employees); Great company culture; Management will not hold you back from moving up; After hours company events are fun;

    Cons

Office/Corporate politics like any other company - you must "get around" and not rely on your added value and good work ethic; Management job postings (internal) are only posted for courtesy - those positions are already filled; Hourly employees have a "point system" so you can get penalized for being 1 minute late and not showing up to work; Vacation is not the best when compared to most companies - only 5 days for the first year; Nothing is ever confidential when speaking to corporate HR or plant management about issues - just don't have any issues and you will be fine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

See the Cons. A better salary/wage compensation would be great.

    Pros

Great corporate campus, wonderful benefits, competitive pay.

    Cons

Like all things, company is a work in progress.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Needs clearer division of responsibilities & definition of roles and responsibilities.

I worked at Universal Forest Products full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Great salary, benefits, car reimbursement and cell phone.

    Cons

They hire sales trainee's to come in and hopefully move their way up, but then use them for "b.s. work". I was in the program for 8 months learning the ins and out of UFP and how day to day sales works, but was ultimately let go due to lack of profit at the plant. I would recommend going into an interview asking them a lot of questions on what you will be doing and for how long. The sales trainee program is so unorganized that not even the plant managers to the full structure of the process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't bring in people to set them up for failure! I would never recommend someone without any experience in this industry to work for UFP!
