I have been working at University College London full-time

    Pros

Great environment, nice offices, insightful staff. One of the top universities in the UK in my field so I've gained a great deal.

    Cons

Bloomsbury isn't the nicest part of London, but hey, it's pleasant enough. Students union makes up for that.

    Pros

UCL offers excellent and continual training opportunities for staff. Dedicated to equal opportunities for staff. Excellent links to industry and private practice.

    Cons

Salary in academia is rather low. There should be staff subsidised travel of some sort for those who have to commute to work.

    Advice to Management

Set up loan scheme for beginners or new graduates for travel cost for the first few months. Implement a bonus scheme for employees.

    Pros

Great location, good facilities, one of the best universities in the world.

    Cons

Determined to build their IT systems in house, it doesn't work. Systems don't communicate well meaning departments don't communicate which each other well. Along with poor administration everything seems to take forever.

    Pros

A very relaxed work environment with great career progression opportunities. UCL encourages everyone including staff and students to engage in enterpreneurial activities .

    Cons

Low salaries compared to other companies for a similar job description especially when comparing London wages and high cost of living, travel.

    Pros

I worked as a postdoctoral research associate in the biochemistry dept. I found UCL to be a great place to engage in some of the best and most exciting research of my career. You're surrounded by some of the best scientists in the world, many of whom are also friendly and collaborative. Many of the courses available to postdocs were of the highest quality, e.g. scientific writing, career development, entrepreneurship.

    Cons

As with any large institution, there are bureaucratic issues and inevitably not _everyone_ is wonderfully friendly and helpful! Bear in mind that my experiences may be very 'localised' as UCL is a huge organisation and there will be big variability even from lab to lab.

    Pros

Great university, on the rise. Best research institution in the UK for the moment. Excellent staff support. Not pretentious, really open minded and promotes diversity.

    Cons

The life of postdoctoral researchers is unfortunately always uncertain. Chances for career development few and competitive.
