I have been working at University College London full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Location, reputation, a lot of talented people who are under-utilised.

    Cons

Shambolic senior management, claim poverty while spending millions on pet projects, poor treatment of staff on lowest grades and contractors, lack of basic facilities, abysmal planning, little effort to build bridges between academics and support staff, increasingly privileged and homogenised intake of students.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Resign and let somebody with talent, vision, and a semblance of morality take over, please.

    Pros

Top university, excellent facilities. Great work life balance. Always good seminars and guest speakers - plenty of opportunity for career development.

    Cons

Perhaps not as much collaboration between different groups within the computer science department as I would have liked. Plenty of opportunity for crossover between different fields.

I have been working at University College London full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Central London location on Bloomsbury surrounded by great food! A relaxed attitude of excellence which is unique to this place.

    Cons

Its very much up to you what you get out of the doctorate programme. No one will push you or stop you - so work hard and pace yourself its a marathon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leadreship keep up the good work but get rid of dead wood. There are definitely academics with strong reputations and records of excellence but those that don't cut it should be addressed and put on improvement programmes to ensure they progress or leave. All academics should turn up to departmental seminars where students and post docs present - they need input from their peers and mentors - thats a basic standard that should be upheld without excuses in all educational institutions.
