    Pros

Everything about this company is great.

    Cons

There are no cons at least for me

  2.

Low pay for a high skill job, and a corporate culture that fails to discourage discriminatory commentary.

    Pros

They paid me on time (and in full), and no one tried to kill me...so I've got that going for me.

    Cons

My job profile was changed multiple times before and after I had agreed to it. The "traditional" xenophobic/Anglo-centric/patriarchal culture is what you will find here (that's Lubbock for you). No, it is not apparent, because customer service and professionalism come first, thankfully. It is in the off-handed comments that you will hear more than a few sexist, racist, and otherwise inappropriate comments. You can go several days in a row without being checked on by direct supervisors, and the upper management is practically absent. Sick days just don't happen - you have to use your very meager PTO to take a sick day, and even if it is legitimate, your coworkers will not pick up your slack whatsoever. Overall, a soul-sucking, death-riddled cesspool of work-until-you-bleed-and-be-happy-about-it healthcare cronies.

Be ready to hear them say, as a rebuttal, "oh, we're nothing like that." Take my word for it: unless you're a white, submissive, straight Christian woman with 2.2 kids or a white, Christian, straight, sports-loving, Republican, emotionless drone of a man with 2.2 kids, you're gonna have a bad time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider taking a more European approach to worker rights. Give people more holidays, pay the new employees and the traditionally low-income workers a living wage (at least ~$15/hr).

    Pros

UMC is an outstanding hospital organization and is well represented by the amazing people that work there. Working in a hospital environment can provide you to experience many difficult situations, but the positive and encouraging environment of UMC and my many co-workers made it a little easier.

    Cons

Lubbock in general is not the most ideal of places to be.

    Pros

Absolutely amazing experience working at UMC. I worked at UMC for about 6 years and held several positions until I graduated from nursing school and worked in the ER. The staff and administration are some of the best I've seen. Very supportive staff/administration with great teamwork. You are recognized for your hard work, great staff to patient ratios, and administration that supports you constantly. If I hadn't moved, I would still be working at UMC.

    Cons

I can't think of any cons! Such a great work environment.

    Pros

Most of UMC's employees are outstanding people with a strong desire to be a part of something greater than themselves.

    Cons

UMC likes to "grow their own" from youth; they do not like to pay for experience. Intradepartmental communication is excellent, but departments do not communicate well with each other. Pay scale and tuition reimbursement is substantially less than other facilities throughout the state.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

UMC in general places too much value on charisma and deportment as basis for upholding its service standards; it does not trust enough in experience and professionalism to raise the organization to a higher level of excellence. Such a transparent value system promotes depreciation of credentials, burnout within the organization, and sets the stage for abusive behavior when inexperienced persons are placed within positions of power and authority. These are contributing factors for why employee turnover is so high in some departments.

Profitability bonuses do not make up for UMC's substantial lag behind the state market in nursing salaries.

If an employee is willing to perform his or her job well for UMC while obtaining an education, UMC should be willing to better offset education expenses and offer incentives to persons who are willing to give time back to TTUHSC and UMC after graduation.

Communication between UMC and TTUHSC needs substantial improvement. UMC is part of the Texas Tech organization. UMC employees are expected to uphold the education needs of TTUHSC students, and contribute to their learning. The relationship is not recipricol in most cases. Loyal UMC employees should not be paying the same tuition rates and expenses as persons who attend school at the health science center that are not part of the UMC organization.

There are many departments and they don't always have the greatest communication.
