I have been working at University of Akron as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Able to expand your knowledge by taking classes that pertain to the area your studying. You have a vast supply of resources to use for your research.Gain experience in managing a research group and setting up lab tests.

    Cons

Have to manage time spent on class work and time dedicated to finishing the research project. While working on the research project I didn't receive much guidance from my research adviser on the direction of the project.

    Advice to Management

There should be fewer graduate students assigned to a professor so they have the ability to work more effectively with their research groups.

I have been working at University of Akron part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They are very understanding and are willing to work around a student's class schedule. My bosses have always been very kind to me.

    Cons

The only downside I can think of is the pay being only minimum wage, but I honestly can't expect a higher pay than that considering how easy my job is.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management would be to keep doing what you're doing! I have learned so much working in an office as a student assistant. I am so glad I had the experience.

    Pros

Payment was easy to arrange with the billing office. The staff was easy to work with. As a contract employee, dates were set in advance.

    Cons

The payroll system is a little hard to maneuver if you have never worked with the university before and the instructions for setting up an account are not intuitive. You receive NO paychecks or statements.

    Advice to Management

I really do not have any advice. The management was easy to deal with and I fulfilled my contract work on time with optimal accuracy so we did not have any issues.

I have been working at University of Akron full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay for a PhD graduate student, taking into a account how cheap the Akron are is. Nice people, great place if you are into polymers.

    Cons

You have to renew your graduate contract now and then and sometimes the office does not do it on time and you end up without one month's salary all the sudden.

I have been working at University of Akron part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexibility, excellent departmental support, and good pay are all benefits of my current position. I love teaching the students as well. I have a lot of professional leeway in my classes, and I have been encouraged to apply when a full-time position has been open.

    Cons

There is a low level of job security in this and all part-time lecturer positions. There is a lot of debate about this nationwide and at my institution. I do not consider this a big issue, but I know some who do. There are few benefits available. For me, because of the hours I work, there is not a lot of interaction with my coworkers. As an introvert, I do not see this as a big disadvantage.

    Advice to Management

I can't think of any way I would change my current position. I am fortunate to have a great deal of departmental support in my position.
