    Pros

Pension for University employees. Good discounts.

    Cons

University politics make it almost impossible to land permanent position. You temp in a position for months, but then they interview others including you. They promote from within, but by law are required to post position. Of course, you have no idea of this practice. Nobody calls you to let you know about the end result. Beyond frustrating! I don't even bother applying anymore.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect the candidate enough to let them know end decision so they're not waiting around.

    Pros

Great benefits - current department is laid back, not all are like that. Love my bosses, great work/life balance.

    Cons

Low pay, difficult to get things done occasionally as people become to job secure after being here for many years and not wanting to put in the extra effort as no reward system in pay.

I worked at University of Alabama at Birmingham full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Providers and researchers of cutting edge treatments for HIV patients Staff are professional experts in their field and engage patients with respect and courtesy. The administrators and healthcare providers make the most of significantly limited resources. Their unique system of treatment processes provides a 360 approach to managing the disease, includes a variety of auxiliary services.

    Cons

Staff members in all functions tend to have a high workload. Response time may not always be satisfactory to a demanding patient population. Wait times can be lengthy at times. All due to a serious lacking in human resources.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My only advice to management is to KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

There 5+ years; great benefits, good work experience, professional environment, somewhat low pay if just starting out

I worked at University of Alabama at Birmingham full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are unbeatable in Alabama; compensation seems a little lower than private-sector due to the better benefits (among certain positions). Competent leadership

    Cons

Too many chiefs, not enough mid-level workers, so senior management can sometimes be disconnected from employee morale and other employee concerns. Overall positive work experience until an inexperienced administrator took on department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Providing more orientation and ongoing systems training to users of EMR/EHR, Medical Billing Systems, and Insurance would help patients and help employees do their jobs better.

Great place for clinical and basic research. Their emphasis on center-focused research and the use of cores allows for easy access to cutting-edge resources.

    Cons

University organization needs some work from the top down. There should be more emphasis on attracting and retaining well-established researchers.
