ProsFriendly fun environment. Lots of interesting research going on. Thier super computing facilities are superb!

ConsSalary is not as good as one would like it but the benefits more than make up for it.

    ConsPay is next to terrible.

    Advice to Senior ManagementBetter pay.

Tough job but potential for success

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsFood, nice room, the opportunity to have an impact on people, live on campus, fellow RAs are pretty nice people

ConsHonesty, being an RA is a tough job. It can be easy to feel trapped in a dorm with people who are threatened by you. End of year move out can be tough. There are always a couple tough residents to deal with. Training is too often, but I think it is some requirement the Management cannot get out of.

    Great opportunities for graduate students!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsEveryone is friendly and helpful. Fayetteville is a great place to live and even raise a family. There is always something to do and go see. Weather is great with lots of sunshine, even in the winter. Great outdoor opportunities with lots of bike trails and parks. Farmers markets are also awesome.

ConsPart of going back to school is living with a lower salary, but the assistantship covers most school and living expenses, so it not so bad.

Advice to Senior ManagementParking could be improved by not lumping the graduate students with all the students. It would be a nice perk.

Be nice to the receptionist and you'll be fine!

    Work Study (Former Employee)

ProsIn the department where I worked, I had great supervisors who understood when I needed a day off when tests were coming up
I spent four years working as a work study and never had trouble

ConsSometimes heads of department are slow to take up new ideas or suggestions when it is needed. It gets frustrating, but most things worked out over time!

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your workers! They're the ones who know what departments need and how to best improve them.

ProsThe working conditions are good and the staff is friendly. Excellent health insurance and fringe benefits to UA employees.

ConsLow salaries for Instructors and very big class size.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease the salaries of instructors and the number of instructors teaching very big classes.

Decent place to have a part time job

    Instructor (Current Employee)
    Fayetteville, AR

Prosexcellent life-work balance, nice campus. if you are a grad student, assistantships and fellowships are available.

Conslow pay, hard to get additional hours. not eligible for health insurance or other benefits if not an appointed employee, even though I work 20 hrs/week. poor quality of students!

Advice to Senior Managementchange your policy about the health insurance!

A great springboard for your career!

    Graduate Research Assistant (Current Employee)
    Fayetteville, AR

ProsReally great people, most of them very accessible (even if you have to schedule a week or two in advance). Excellent opportunities in training and use for specialized equipment.
Many opportunities to network and make contacts from all over the world! Lots of extra-curricular activities to learn more about different areas in your field, or completely new things.
A growing institution that is handling things very well!
Many ways to pay/get paid for graduate school; private funding, corporate funding, TA positions, local start ups, you name it and go for it (in the science/engineering side of things anyway), you got plenty of ways to obtain funding.
Hours can be erratic yet flexible, great for me personally, but this is not a steady 9-5 (unless you work hard at making it that), if that'w what you're looking for.

ConsDepending on your personality, it can be hard to get noticed or get things changed if you personally do not take charge to make it happen. In other words, not very clear direction. Your time here really is what you make it.
Pay is so-so, especially for students, but I mean, what else do you expect for a university.

Advice to Senior ManagementPublicize institutional changes more clearly, with more advance notice, to all the students/faculty. Especially changes in construction, est. completion dates, etc...

    Keep it up!

    Good school, great location.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe campus is a nice place to work with friendly staff and faculty. It attracts a lot of renowned speakers and brings significant diversity to Northwest Arkansas. Vacation time and heath benefits are comparable to other higher education institutions.

ConsConstant construction on campus. Not enough staff and space to keep up with the growing number of students. There is little room for professional growth and promotions in many departments.
