Research

Graduate Student Researcher (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at University of Calgary full-time for more than a year

ProsLots of great funding and opportunities to work with other researcher and peers in my field. Provided all the necessary tools to be an effective researcher.

ConsBeing a university, they suffer from the typical bureaucracy that all publicly funded institutions have to deal with. That said, everyone I worked with was aware of this and worked within it.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Fairly good university for undergrad

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I have been working at University of Calgary as an intern for less than a year

Pros- Eyes High strategy means the university is investing in new assistant professors, buildings & programs
- Fewer superstars (faculty/students) means you can stand out easier
- Funding for undergraduate research

Cons- Weather
- Wouldn't suggest the UofC for most graduate programs since they aren't very high quality
- Graduate students are fairly low quality because of the aforementioned low quality of the grad programs - TAs usually won't be very good

Advice to Senior Management- More communication/transparency with respect to budget decisions
- More *specific* goals with respect to the Eyes High strategic/academic plans that can be tracked and evaluated as accomplished/getting there/not accomplished

Financial Administrator - Student/Part Time

Financial Administrator - Student/Part Time (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at University of Calgary part-time for more than a year

ProsVery flexible to allow me to accommodate my schooling. They realized that school was the top priority and work was second to that, which helped a lot.

ConsThe work was pretty monotonous and similar throughout, so there wasn't much change, but that's to be expected for this type of position.

Good for administrators, bad for younger faculty and students

Assistant Professor (Current Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I have been working at University of Calgary as a contractor for more than 3 years

ProsHaving job anywhere is something to be thankful for. If you are an engineer like the president of U of C it might be a good place to attend/work. Also good if you already have tenure (meaning you are in your mid-50s or older) and can't be fired.

ConsNo sense of community AT ALL. It's everyone for himself and winner takes all at this institution. Polytechnic better describes U of C than "university." Hiring for best positions based on family and other connections (spousal hires, sons/daughters, lovers, etc.), politics, and rarely merit. Though paid the most, tenured faculty often teach very few and very small classes yet are not always productive.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in and better respect ALL employees. Meet face to face with younger faculty (especially those on contract doing most of the teaching) - don't just send out an anonymous survey costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and listen to tenured faculty who have no reason to improve/change things.

In principle good environment, but complicated management structure

Postdoctoral Fellow (Current Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I have been working at University of Calgary full-time for more than 3 years

ProsAcademic Setting, nice campus and office space, free thinking environment, student interactions

ConsIndependent work is difficult. Contributing your own knowledge and agendas is difficult, if not impossible. Eyes High Goals nice on paper, but implementation is more than questionable. Investment strategies unclear. How can a university become a leading institution when young researchers are not supported and literally kicked out due to funding issues.

Advice to Senior ManagementTalk to junior researchers at postdoc level. The get the least support but are the ones who will help you to achieve your ambitious goals.
