    Financial Administrator - Student/Part Time

Financial Administrator - Student/Part Time (Former Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsVery flexible to allow me to accommodate my schooling. They realized that school was the top priority and work was second to that, which helped a lot.

ConsThe work was pretty monotonous and similar throughout, so there wasn't much change, but that's to be expected for this type of position.

Good for administrators, bad for younger faculty and students

Assistant Professor (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsHaving job anywhere is something to be thankful for. If you are an engineer like the president of U of C it might be a good place to attend/work. Also good if you already have tenure (meaning you are in your mid-50s or older) and can't be fired.

ConsNo sense of community AT ALL. It's everyone for himself and winner takes all at this institution. Polytechnic better describes U of C than "university." Hiring for best positions based on family and other connections (spousal hires, sons/daughters, lovers, etc.), politics, and rarely merit. Though paid the most, tenured faculty often teach very few and very small classes yet are not always productive.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in and better respect ALL employees. Meet face to face with younger faculty (especially those on contract doing most of the teaching) - don't just send out an anonymous survey costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and listen to tenured faculty who have no reason to improve/change things.

In principle good environment, but complicated management structure

Postdoctoral Fellow (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsAcademic Setting, nice campus and office space, free thinking environment, student interactions

ConsIndependent work is difficult. Contributing your own knowledge and agendas is difficult, if not impossible. Eyes High Goals nice on paper, but implementation is more than questionable. Investment strategies unclear. How can a university become a leading institution when young researchers are not supported and literally kicked out due to funding issues.

Advice to Senior ManagementTalk to junior researchers at postdoc level. The get the least support but are the ones who will help you to achieve your ambitious goals.

ConsThere is no "we" at this university. Faculty do their own thing with lack of strategy for the entire faculty.
