I have been working at University of Calgary

    Pros

Faculty and instructors work very hard to create good outcomes for students. Leadership Team communicates how they want the organization to change but also what the organization will become

    Cons

lack of competitive salaries and benefits creates the most friction as Calgary is a very expensive city with a very low rental rate

I have been working at University of Calgary full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Salary is competitive and benefits are very good. Excellent health plan and health spending account. Company pension plan is always a plus. Unionized. Lots of services available to staff on campus, doctors, massage, chrio, optometrist, dentists, pharmacy.

    Cons

union protects the weak, so it can be hard to get rid of dead weight. it is also difficult to get a position. Trainees are not considered employees and have different benefits and are not unionized. Trainees are paid poorly. the politics at an educational institution are hard to deal with, lots of red tape.

I worked at University of Calgary full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great training environment for graduate students. Within certain faculties there are a lot of opportunities for scholarships and awards. Ample opportunity to attend scientific conferences.

    Cons

Lots of variation between different faculties and supervisors. Minimum stipends and funding opportunities vary drastically between faculties, programs, and even labs. Very heavy workload in comparison to amount of pay. Even with a good (ie. $30000/year) stipend, it's hard to live in comfortably in Calgary.

    Pros

The people are great and the work I'm doing is very meaningful. There is a high commitment to respect in the workplace and new training and learning opportunities are becoming available. Engagement of staff seems to be a strong priority going forward.
