    Good environment; administratively disorganized

    Graduate Student Researcher (Current Employee)
    Berkeley, CA

ProsUC Berkeley provides the opportunity to work with incredibly smart people on cutting-edge topics. The social environment here is positive, and you can't beat the Bay Area weather and proximity to San Francisco!

ConsUC Berkeley is a giant bureaucracy. The mid-level administration is rather disorganized. Paperwork gets lost and everything takes much, much longer than it should.

Advice to Senior ManagementClean up your information technology systems! There are twenty different systems for getting things done. It's never clear where to go for what, and none of the systems are easy to navigate.

ProsGreat environment, full of intellectual stimulation, fabulous support staff

ConsGSIs don't make nearly enough to cover the Bay Area cost of living

Diverse place to work with lots of career growth potential

    Manager (Former Employee)
    Berkeley, CA

ProsVery diverse, international student, faculty and staff; beautiful campus with trees, monuments, museums, libraries, recreational and cultural activities; lots of great off campus cafes, restaurants, books stores

ConsLots of bureaucracy, politics, levels of administration and micro-cultures that can be either positive or negative, depending on how they are managed. Decent salaries, benefits and perks.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to build on developing, recognizing and rewarding staff; flatten the organization; listen to staff regarding staff issues and what would support staff in being most effective in their jobs; provide employee incentives for successful recruitment of high performing new hires. Offer robust outplacement services to those who leave by choice or no-choice.

    Good money, crappy job

    Student Fundraiser (Former Employee)
    Berkeley, CA

ProsGreat money for a college student I actually made more here than with my degree at a few of my first jobs out of college
Fun games at work, good potentional bonuses as well but good luck with getting them
Fun relaxed environment, can talk, eat at desk etc...

ConsCold calling people who want nothing to do with Berkeley, pressuring old, unemployed and broke people for money

Not much space to move up within company

Also watch out for money hungry management. Since the higher ups control leads they basically and usually take all the good money off top and leave the rest of the employees with scraps

    Staff IT Support

    Desktop Consultant (Current Employee)
    Berkeley, CA

ProsProgressive minded management that allows for students to higher/run IT support teams. Very flexible and works with your school schedule. Great way to build technical, leadership, interviewing and highering experience.

ConsCan include a lot of work/responsibility during your school semester as compared to other less technical school jobs.

Great Work/LIfe Balance, Compensation & Job Security Problematic

    Data Systems Analyst (Current Employee)
    Berkeley, CA

    ProsThe work/life balance is outstanding.
    Flexible hours
Ability to take time off for family reasons
Many work from home multiple days
Low key work environment (most of the time)
    Lots of PTO
    Great benefits

ConsPay is 15-20% below market rate
New hires are mostly on contract appointments which can end at any time
Middle management somewhat out of touch
Budgetary impacts are difficult to predict
Some erosion of benefits, especially in health care

Advice to Senior ManagementThe CIO is on the right track building corporate culture & team identity with the OneIT inititiative. Need to back it up with predictable career paths. The prevalence of contract appointments institutionalize a tier of "second class citizens'"

Cal Calling Center was a fantastic job for a student that offers good pay and a relaxed environment.

    Student Fundraiser (Former Employee)
    Berkeley, CA

ProsLots of feedback on work performance, positive and relaxed work environment, very flexible scheduling, good rate of pay for a student job, enhances your abilities in negotiating.

ConsIt's a call center, so when you are not talking to anyone it can get boring. However, since studying is permitted when you aren't actually on the phone, this is a minimal problem. Occasionally there would be technical issues, but these were usually addressed promptly.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe environment can get pretty loud, which could sometimes affect my ability to clench a pledge.
